The Moonraker Overture

So - this.

It sounds like an overture to Moonraker. It's extremely lovely. It's written around the same time as films like Star Trek and The Black Hole (a Barry score) were getting overtures. But I've not heard anything about it other than this appearance and lots of dodgy download sites.

Is it real? Was it played before performances of the film? Does anyone know?

It's news to me ... I was unconvinced that it is an official s/t recording. The arrangement is good, but doesn't sound "complete" enough and a couple of themes seem to compete within the mix, which is most un-Barry-like. Perhaps that is why it wasn't released.

Still waiting for that extended MR OST album though ... perhaps ...

It's a cover version done by Richard Hayman in the 90's on the Naxos label.

Aha! Mystery solved, thank you. It's still a lovely piece of music.

And yup, an extended Moonraker is the thing of dreams...
