Re-watched The Empty Hearse again and another SKYFALL-Bond parallel occurred which so far hasn't been mentioned.
H & W Craigy through the underground and on to the track. They board a tube carriage and find a bomb. (Meanwhile, in SKYFALL Bond heads up to Scotland in an old car and the villain simply follows him).
Now I wonder if Gatiss and Moff aren't having fun at the dour nature of Craig-Bond and its essential difference from trad Bond? Here, they have the confidence to put Sherlock Holmes in a VERY trad Bond situation - defuse a bomb or many people will die - which is very un-Holmesian (while the climax of Craig-Bond are globally unthreatening).
And rather than running about and sweating all Sherlock Holmes does is coollly flick the off switch. Which all bombs have.
The mention of a blunt instrument for Briton; oh, how the Bond-nation will have laughed at that ) A private plane, a mission for her Maj in central Europe? Do Gat and Moff know something about Benny having had the nod as the next JB???????????!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoyed the documentary- though I thought it was pretty strange that Sir Christopher Lee was only seen to talk about playing Sir Henry Baskerville in The Hound... and Mycroft in The Private Life... and not about the several times he's played Holmes!
Even more, though, I loved "His Last Vow"! Fantastic updating of the Charles Augustus Milverton tale, throwing in a touch of Rupert Murdoch, and what a wonderful use of the Mary Watson/Morstan character- totally not what I was expecting. Mark Gatiss's Mycroft in his element, and once again some not-so-subtle Bond references (Conan Doyle certainly never had the UK government refer to Holmes as a "blunt instrument"- pure Bond!). Less sure about the cliffhanger ending, perhaps a bit gimmicky. Above all the warm and by now seasoned performances of Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch (and their families!). Sherlock is indisputably the best show on British TV (IMHO) and I can't wait for series 4... and 5...
The two stars (which they definitely are now) are right to capitalise on their current fame and take their pick of the big movies offered them while they can- the BBC can't match what Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson pay- secure in the knowledge that the series will be waiting for them. Part of the beauty of such characters as Holmes and Watson (and Poirot, etc) is that they're more or less ageproof; an actor can play Holmes in his 30s (Cumberbatch), 40s (Rathbone), 50s (Brett), 60s (Cushing), 70s (Lee). My only regret is that I'm 20 years older than Benedict Cumberbatch and won't be around to enjoy his take on an old Holmes.
On that subject, I would dearly love to see the cast of Sherlock (Cumberbatch, Freeman, Gatiss, Graves, Stubbs, etc) do a one-off episode set in period- say, 1890. With the Hansom cabs, gas lights, etc. Moffat and Gatiss are intelligent writers, it's not beyond them to figure out an excuse to do this within the framework of the current series.
Oh, a period episode would be a lot of fun -{ , and I'm sure could be done.

Just finished 'His Last Vow' and it was worth the license fee alone !
Sheer, stupendous entertainment from beginning to end !
Gatiss and Moffat absolutely nailed EVERYTHING ! I've loved Moffat's writing since 'Coupling' and he just gets better and better...Gatiss is a tremendous, underrated talent....I can't praise the two of them enough...
Obviously the script needs actors...and every last one of them was spot on...not too little, not too much...but WHAT a script ! The dialogue crackled all the way through, it didn't let up...and both Cumberbatch and Freeman are amazing to watch in this...both deserve all the credit that comes their way...
I'd love to see Gatiss bring the 'essence' of Mycroft to the Bond films...I think it would be a revelation ! As long as they let him write the part too !
Don't really fancy the idea of these 'doing' a period piece though...
His Last Vow was excellent stuff, possibly the best Sherlock episode to date. I will definitely have to watch it again!
I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next series. But in the meantime I'll be satisfying my appetite for Holmes by watching the Jeremy Brett series and the Basil Rathbone films. Also, I'm going to read the Doyle short stories on my daily train journey to work.
To be honest: I was fairly disappointed in the recent series. Sherlock has gone from a very good 'regular' series to a 'let's see how crazy we can get' series. The finale never seemed to end... And honestly:

It seems that B Cumberbatch has been offered the role of Ian Fleming in an up coming movie. If it
happens would it scupper any hopes of him playing Bond ? would it be a first for an actor to play

Heard Martin Freeman interviewed by Richard Bacon on Radio 5 Live of Wednesday; said they'd hoped to start filming SHERLOCK 4 in the autumn but that was off as they couldn't co-ordinate at the talents necessary for that time. X-(
