So far, oh yes. It's basically the same story, but with things left out & added in to make it seem like a totally serious Bond novel. Not *quite* as successful as his TSWLM, but given the basic material, I didn't expect it to be. More than anything, it's just a really fun read.

I thoroughly loved Wood's TSWLM novelization, so I gave his MR a try, and while the first half was outstanding, the second half let me down a bit, but what was I expecting, eh? I knew basically what was coming. He did manage to put a rather realistic-sounding spin on the space part, but (and this may just be my impression) it seems like he wasn't as into writing during the last third, as if his initial belief that he could turn it into something as great as his TSWLM had dwindled some. Still well written, but lots of carelessly "terrified him"s and "hopeless"s tossed about for my taste. Still, curiosity satisfied, and it was definitely much better than the film version.

Believe it not Colonel Sun is next to it too, I should read that novel too. I just buy them at second hand bookstores and forget about them.

I read the first chapter or two about Bond playing gold with Tanner and M getting kidnapped then I gave up for some unknown reason.

Since I am in a Bond mood after reading Carte Blanche and in the middle of Solo I'll probably read it afterwards.

Yeah, I read the first two Gardner novels, they were average and I felt like I was reading just a cheap 80's paperback. Got another one floating around, can't remember the title (Some of the titles are pretty bad).

That's the problem with reading a new Bond novel. I end wanting to go and read the rest, Gardner/Benson books even though I know they are poor. Have still got both Wood's TSWLM and MR to read (I've been saving them up as I'm expecting good stuff from what's been written on here.) Chrisisall is right though, if you haven't read Amis' novel then you really should as I rate it higher than some of Fleming's own work.

I always found the section with Sir Ranald to be tough to get through. After that, it was a pretty quick read.
