  I think the James Bond phenomenon institutionalized themes that were considered taboo and exploitative before it came along, so much so that when he became a favorite character for little kids (as indicated in the TB featurette, ""How To Blow Up A Motor Car"), parents didn't mind or notice that unlike the wholesome examples that came before it became okay for their kids to pretend to be this guy who sexually objectified women and killed in casual cold blood. Was it an issue of bourgeois thinking of the emerging middle-class, in that, "James Bond" is classy, so I must like James Bond"?
  
  I think that today's full-blown acceptance of gratuitous sex and violence took decades to develop though definitely, Bond paved the way. Even in the midst of the Bond Phenomenon movies like The Godfather, The Wild Bunch and Midnight Cowboy were classified for their adult nature, though nowadays, Bond, who categorically represents those things, is celebrated with a wink in primetime, mainstream media in that parents are desensithized with the sex and violence that their kids ingest not only in Bond movies but everything else they watch.
