I think Timmo should have stepped in for FYEO, then maybe lose some of the sillier elements of OP and AVTAK and we would have had a great set of films, still with the classic Broccoli 'feel', something I feel the new films lack.
Years ago Bond films set the trend, now they tend to follow what is fashionable in film, ie, dark, overly serious. I still like the newer films but Bond can't be taken 100% seriously, just as I think Batman, a guy who wears skintight rubber, shouldn't take itself too seriously.

At least Batman had a dark core despite some... campy productions at points. Bond, even in the novels, seemed to be more about the excitement and intrigue of spy life. So going too dark and brooding pushes the boundaries a little too much in my opinion. Even in Dalton's films, some of the darker Bonds before Craig, there was enough of the gadgetry, action, and cheekiness to keep the films from being too weighted down.

When I watch Bond, I don't want a dark and gritty treatise on how the spy life screws people up... I want the martini swilling, smooth talking ass kicker that gets the girl by the end.

As for Dalton's Run... I think it would have been nice to see him at least take over with a View to a Kill... Moore was just too old at that point. Would have loved to see him through Goldeneye as well simply because it is a Dalton film just with Brosnan as Bond. Though Brosnan did a fantastic job so I won't take it too hard that we didn't get it with Dalton.

Deal and came back ? Hence the visiting of Tracy's grave as a

But on her tombstone her death was correctly stated as 1969... making Bond about 50 at that point... ?

Brolin was 43 when he did his screen test- ie, younger than Moore was when he took the role, but older than any of the others (although there is a little doubt over Dalton's exact date of birth).

So I didn't really want to derail another thread with this, so I decided to put it here as it seems appropriate: It had been years since I'd seen either one of the two Dalton films, I knew I didn't really enjoy them much but I couldn't exactly remember why except for the fact that I found The Living Daylights to be extremely boring and I didn't like Licence To Kill that much better. I have always been a much bigger fan of Connery/Moore/Brosnan/Craig throughout the years and found Dalton's performance to be flat, but when I arrived here so many had Dalton listed so highly on their "favorite Bond list" that I considered the possibility that maybe it was I who was missing the boat.

With that in mind, I promised my new forum friend TP and others (much to the protest of Higgins lol) that I would view both films again after many years away from Timothy Dalton's Bond. So in the past two nights I have once again set my eyes on TLD and LTK and what I found basically (and hopefully without seriously offending the Dalton fans) is that I should have listened to Higgins lol.

I respect that many fans see him as the closest to Ian Fleming's vision of Bond, I really do- but there are many things that bother me about his portrayal. I think at times he was melodramatic and at other times he looked just downright uncomfortable as Bond. Now he also had many things working against him: (the villains in TLD were paste thin and the supporting actors and script of LTK was god-awful), but I disagree with those who say that Goldeneye would have been a better film had Dalton stepped into the tux again. It would have totally ruined the experience for me.

TP- I respect You buddy and I certainly appreciate the way that You and other good Dalton fans have welcomed me around these parts, but I'm afraid Higgins has an ally here. Sign me up in the "No-Dalton-For-Me" fan club :))

Without trying to sound disrespectful, if you disagree with the proposition that he was the closest to Fleming's vision of Bond - why? To me, Dalton embodies the Fleming Bond - the Bond who is human rather than superhero, who is vulnerable as opposed to invincible, who has such a distaste for killing that drinks his humanity away, as opposed to making quips about his work. In some ways, the literary Bond is the antithesis of the cinematic Bond.

The literary Bond isn't someone that women want to be with, nor someone that men want to be. At the end of the day, he is a ruthless killer, paid by his government to kill people. On that basis, Dalton has nailed the literary Bond down to a T, and that's why purists like myself love him.

I think the very fact that I saw him as Fleming's Bond is enough to make him (a very close) second only to Connery, in my view. Connery is perhaps the better actor, and his first two films were absolutely brilliant, but his last two outings as Bond let him down.

I take no offense and I don't think You were disrespectful at all. Although I must say that You have me wrong here: I never said that I disagreed with the notion that he was closest to Fleming's Bond, I just said that his portrayal of Bond (whether he Fleming's Bond or not) isn't really my cup of tea. I get that You are a loyalist to the literary version of Bond and I totally understand it. Me personally, I enjoy the Bond that's cooler than the other side of the pillow. Is he as well-rounded as a character? Of course not, but I certainly find him more entertaining.

Again, it is I who should be saying that I mean no offense. I realize that Dalton has a large (and somewhat vocal) following on this board and me posting about how I enjoy Brosnan and (gasp) Moore's runs as Bond more is just not going to be well received. I do enjoy Craig's portrayal of the "flawed" Bond much better if it's any consolation? We do agree that Connery is the gold standard though- even if Diamonds Are Forever should have stayed on the shelf.

All the Bond actors have played to different parts of Bond's character.
Connery,Craig and Lazenby are very psychical
Moore & Brosnan, are very suave and witty
Brosnan and Dalton, made Bond more human/emotional.
So they're All good for me. ;)
