Never seen it advertised before. :))
Krav Maga works for those who like it- some extremely similar moves are in (taken from) other arts I've studied.
Look for lack of ego in the teacher; big egos generally mask small knowledge.

Like all martial arts, Krav Maga is an effective self-defense art if and only if it is taught correctly. As it's become more popular, quite a few mediocre Krav Maga schools have popped up to cash in on the trend, so be wary.

And what do I mean by "taught correctly"? There must be sparring. This is vital. And I don't mean flow drills. I mean sparring against a resisting opponent. To quote Burton Richardson (my own instructor), “If you want to learn how to fight, you must practice fighting against someone who is fighting back!"

Admittedly it was a long time ago but my old Karate Sensei said basically
The same thing, I remember sparing every training night, and it was full
    on fighting . :))

I've trained with Burton for over 12 years. He's a great guy and a great instructor. I feel really fortunate to know him and to learn from him.

And to toot my own horn a bit... I've earned two teaching certifications under Burton—Kali and JKD/MMA—as well as my Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Here's a cool photo of Burton performing a Silat takedown on me...

    You are!
From 1974 to 1999 I moved from school to school, being like a sponge. Out of all of them, Wing Chun clicked with me most, but my JKD schools were high up there since WC was a big base. So, ANYTHING WC or JKD was my area of fascination.
Of course, my TKD days served me best in movies... :))

I can post pictures every week here but I doubt people will notice it :D Currently I look pretty rubbish for a 23 year old and the following pic from yesterday is a proof of that:
    2014_08_18.jpg

Thing is that I'm struggling to loose weight for like 4 years now, however there is so much stress in my life that I simply can't keep up with both a healthy diet and exercise. I just give up to often. :/
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
It can be very tough :# luckily I have moved into the " Fat, middle aged "
Category, so I'm happy but spent years on one diet or other, exercising
Regularly, without a great deal of success. I've come to my own conclusion
That. You have to change the way you eat ( I always was a comfort eater)
and find another way of dealing with stress. Going for a run, punching a bag.
Sadly for most of us it's a continuing battle. I remember reading that Roger
Moore would easily put on weight and when doing Bond, basically lived on
    Boiled fish.
I've at last given up because I've reached the point that No One is sexually
Interested in me so I don't have to bother trying looking good anymore. :))

First thing I'd suggest is trying to get the negativity out of your thinking - easier said than done yes, but it will help you greatly. Everyone has to start somewhere and the main thing is you seem like you want to change your physique & habits. IMO it does soon enough become a lifestyle choice and if you're determined enough it'll also soon become second nature.

Anyway - what sort of things are you doing at the moment? Walking? Jogging? What are your personal goals? Do you have 'bad' eating habits?

I was a hefty old unit a few years back ... cutting a long story short, I had stress with work, failed marriage, a tendency to booze too heavily & too much of a liking for fast food. Made the decision to sort my life out & am fairly pleased with the results now. It took time & a lot of effort, plus I made the decision to get support from family & friends to make sure that they knew what I was trying to achieve. Little things like that can help when you're feeling angry because you've possibly not lost the weight you were after in a particular week.

Trust me - there's plenty of people out there in a similar boat, but only you can make sure that you are the one that succeeds! Keep going for it & don't knock yourself for the odd "cheat" meal now & again.

    Very best of luck! -{

I'm trying to do 5k every day, I don't have more time currently because I have a big exam coming up in September... Also I'm using those apps made by runtastic (pretty awesome in my opinon). As for the diet: thing is that I'm not in the best financial position, I'm going to be honest. Most of the money I have I earned myself thanks to my graphic stuff but I don't have time for that either now, the other thing is of course the exam. I'm also a big fast food lover, it's very difficult for me to not buy an occasional cheeseburger or McFlurry and it's even more difficult now when I have a lot of stress connected with those two things.

However it's the third day and I have not skipped a workout, nor have I ate anything unhealhy - not bad for a start.

Thanks mate, I will try to post pictures here like the one above every week - maybe it will serve as some sort of motivation.

Hey MrZ your a young man and can make a big impact on the rest of your life, good on you for starting.

There is an old adage about finding a sport you like to do, and then building your training around that, or for that. That kind of thing keeps you motivated.

Other little changes make a difference too. Don't take the car when you can cycle, or run, or walk. Don't take the lift when you can use the stairs. If you can keep that mindset it helps reduce falling too far back when you have a bad spell and don't get on treadmill/running for a few days.

Heart rate monitors always seem like a good idea to me because irrespective of fitness level as long as your are working in the right zone, your working in the right zone. That way you don't have to worry about 5k times and such like, and it's about what you are doing. You can also mix it up and add cycling or skipping to vary the work, and still know your in the right area. All those manual jobs around the home are just work, exercise, call it what you will, they all count.

IMO a 10 min jog in the morning is a good kickstart to the day, after coffee but before breakfast. Being skint does lend itself to junk food nibbling, mainly sugary chocolate so I sympathise. That said, tinned sardines or mackerel with brown rice and tomato or onion or avocado are good, cheap meals. Also, working through a litre or more or tap water wherever you are.

Stress is bad also, maybe try camomile tea or green tea to ease off during the day, as coffee just makes it worse and you get in the coffee/chocolate cycle.

Protein shakes, too, and plenty of sleep so you are not just snacking to stay awake.

It is odd how sometimes it takes ages to see any results, if any at all.
I used to drive to work but changed to fast walking ( 5 miles a day)
Now I'm sure I got fitter but I didn't look any different. :))

Actually I don't have a rigoristic diet, I'm kinda basing it on the Daniel Craig's one but since I'm a lot bigger than him I modified it a bit to fit my needs. Every day since monday I run 5km + some minor activities, after the exam, which will be in the middle of September, I want to go back to the gym. Anyway - I lost 2kg since Monday (1kg of which is probably water) so I guess I'm on the right track. I have to loose around 10kg before I start bulking up and trasforming myself into a double-o. :D

Also Thunderpussy I know exactly what you're talking about - my case is also not about stamina. I look like I'm in the 3rd month but I can still do a 10km mid-paced run without any problems. I used to play basketball for my school so the body is used to some serious exercise, but since I've got a slow metabolism I really need time to drop all that weight. In January (new year's resolution of course...) I was pretty close... But then the exams arrived and I screwed up everything.

Eat good proteins (steak, turkey, fish, chicken, wild meats etc), plenty of greens, good fats & reduce your carb levels a touch. Plenty of water, good sleep & try to find a way to switch off from stress.

    Best of luck - you can do it!! -{
