I've come to the opinion that the Bond actors fall into two groups.

Movie Star,......... Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan ( might put GL here, as we'll never know )
Serious Actor, ... Connery, Dalton and Craig.

    Make sense.
Dalton is the Bond! Lazenby is the other fella.

I'm not a film critic, nor am I a teacher at a drama school. So I can only give you my list of favorite Bonds. So this is not based on acting ability (Craig for instance would score higher).

    1. Roger Moore. I know he shouldn't top this list, but for my he does. I enjoy most of his movies immensely and he is a great ambassador of Bond.
    2. Sean Connery. "So low?!?!" I hear you scream. While he still is the quintessential Bond and most of his movies rank high in my top 23
    3. Timothy Dalton. Great moments in two very good/great movies. Really a shame he wasn't able to do more, however, by the time GoldenEye was made I think it was a wise decision for him to pass the torch.
    4. Pierce Brosnan. Cookie Cutter Bond.
    5. George Lazenby. His only movie is my favorite movie of all the Bond movies, but let's face it, that is not because of Lazenby.
    6. Daniel Craig. Harsh? Yes, maybe, but like I stated above, this is my list. I don't enjoy him and his movies as much as the others. I thought CR was pretty good, QOS not at all and Skyfall so-so. To me he also isn't as close to the Bond of the novels as other people make him out to be.

    I'd say:
1/2. Connery & Brosnan (hard to choose!)
3/4 Dalton & Lazenby (also hard to choose)
    5. Craig (no competition here!)

Well, the title of the topic is "The five Bond actors..." but it was started before Craig's run started.

I like Thunderpussy's definition / criterion of Movie Star / Serious Actor

For me, the key to whether an actor was successful as James Bond has always been two-fold:

    - Was he seen worldwide as a movie star?
    - Was he seen as one of the coolest men on the planet?

Using the above I think Connery (without question),Moore (77-79), Brosnan and Craig all tick the boxes. Sadly, Lazenby and Dalton don't.
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
-{ agree 100%, much as I love Dalton as Bond, for some reason the public
Didn't seem to have the same love for him as say they had for, Connery or
Moore. Would this have changed with a third film ? and Lazenby "dropped
the ball " big time. :#
Craig, is very popular, he seems a cool guy, so like Connery, we're lucky
enough to once again have an almost modern icon ( cool, contemporary
    and British ) playing Bond.

The Public most likely would have become more accepting of Dalton if he carried on.

In my opinion Dalton had a very hard job, Sir Roger had been Bond
For so long, and the easy going formula had become so established
That, I'm sure it was a jolt to many cinema goers, to have this harder
edged, more realistic ( less superman ) Bond.

( isn't it great to be able to discuss Dalton, as apparently his biggest fan
    Is on. Holiday :)) )

I don't quite agree with the characterization of Movie Star vs. Serious Actor. It is implying that one can't be both. Connery was certainly a Movie Star after GF, while Craig is currently a Movie Star. Meanwhile putting Brosnan & Moore in the Movie Star category seems to imply that they aren't serious actors, which is a bit of a slap in the face to them. Both have had serious acting roles despite taking a less "serious" approach to the Bond character.

Dalton is really the only one that fits in one category. I don't believe he was ever seen as a Movie Star despite his excellent acting ability.

Each Bond actor is unique and amazing in their own way :D

    {[] I wholeheartedly agree :))

I don't think calling Moore and Brosnan Movie stars is an insult, just that they are Perceived
as being Movie stars, while Craig,Connery and Dalton all seemed to have done plenty of research
etc to play the role. While with Moore and Brosnan they seemed to basically play themselves or
rather what we the audience expect of them, with an odd nod to the Fleming character in a
    couple of scenes.

Fair enough. Based on interviews it definitely seems clear that Dalton put the most thought of the Fleming character into his acting. Connery also had a leg up because he had Ian Fleming there on set during the first couple films. It just seemed that by putting Brozzer and Moore in the non-serious actor group that they were bad actors. Not trying to put those words in your mouth, I just get a little defensive of those two since many casual fans equate camp and over the top with bad acting. It's just a different style, that seems to be a little polarizing these days.
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
Oh, I love Moore as Bond too, infact putting the actors
In order of how you'd rate them is very difficult as they
    Were/are so good. {[]

    1) George Lazenby. It took me a long time to really enjoy his performance, but now I just want to invent a time machine to go back in 1969 and convince him not to quit his role. :D

    2) Sean Connery. Such a perfect performance, he may not be the closest to the Bond of the novel, but he's just awesome !

    3) Timothy Dalton. After the goofiness of Roger Moore, Dalton's a real sunshine ! Such a shame he only did two movies ...

    4) Daniel Craig. I've always love the way he took over the role of 007. If it hasn't been for his great predecessors, he would be higher in the list.

    5) Roger Moore. I've kind of a mix opinion about him. If in one hand he's sure enjoyable (I love for instance Octopussy or AVTAK), I never was a huge fan of the goofy style he brought to the series. Even though movies like FYEO shows he could have done a much better performance.

    6) Pierce Brosnan. He sure wasn't bad, but he never had a great movie to show his real potential (the first one was allright but afterwards his movies were getting each time worse ...).

Well, you obviously expected me to not come back :p
    Did not happen :D

I find this discussion pointless as personal preferences for the different eras are watering the judgement and it really does not matter how good the actor acts. It's the result - the finished movie that counts.

But Dalton is certainly a bad actor because his way to express anger, rage and romance has the same facial expression - watery eyes :D
Sir Roger at least had 3:

    1. Right eyebrow rised
    2. Left eyebrow raised
    3. crosseyed when Jaws hit his kidneystones :D
President of the 'Misty Eyes Club'.

Dalton - the weak and weepy Bond!

Check out this item about The November Man that explodes into an all-out war over who is the "weakest" Bond. I added my two cents and even though I don't use my Blackleiter moniker, if you are a regular here and you read through enough of the comments, you'll probably figure out which comments are mine.

I see now. For a moment I thought you were implying that was me!!!! :o

I visit the site once in a while and that user name is pretty mild compared to some of the others I have seen. I couldn't help but weigh in on the Bond actor debate, but I have a harder and harder time going there because many of the posts are at times extremely racist, sexist and homophobic. It's such a shame that an entertainment site (or any site, for that matter) attracts those who hold such ugly, hateful views. :#
