Makes me wonder, how the crime rate would be if only women could carry a gun.
So let's think for a moment that it would be impossible for women to hand over guns to men and that they where the only one to carry guns.

What a peaceful world this would be!

Indeed, MEN are the problem. Michael Moore once said that he did not understand the fear of the US society against black men or muslim looking men. The guys who have the highest murder rate are WHITE MEN - thus the movie Stupid White Men.

    And he's right!

Yes. If only all men were as peacefull as Margret Thatcher and Indira Ghandi .... :v

No, the world would not be more peaceful if TP had a gun :))

I'm a little pi**ed off myself right now since I just came back after discovering pistol practice was one hour earlier than I thought X-(

Are you saying all real democracies are monarcies? ?:) :))
    Moneyarcies.

    Recently??? ?:)

Seriously though, the responses from many of our non-US members are compatible with my own beliefs. The argument that "guns don't kill people, people kill people" holds little sway with me, because the fact of the matter is that the ready availability of guns make it far too easy for "people to kill people". Of course people are killed by means other than guns, but I am convinced that in many instances what would have been a fist fight or perhaps a non-fatal stabbing winds up as a murder because someone happened to have a gun on hand.

Well, that guy is lucky that he did not die!

Not sure if the policeman is to be blamed - the guy could have pulled a gun out of his car.

Imo a typical example what happens when everyone may have a weapon everywhere.......

Notice to myself: Move very slowly and carefully when a cop stops you in the US

"If convicted"??? He won't be convicted of anything. A jury will be led by nose to decide that the officer had probable cause to fear for his life. That how it works in the wild wild west.

From the clips, so far. Many American's are lucky, most
Gun owners seem. Not to be able to hit the side of a barn
when standing beside it ! :)) otherwise there'd be even
    More killings. :#

I agree. I was shocked when I first saw the video but on reflection like you say he could have quite easily been reaching in for a weapon.

Do we know if the male stopped was known to the officer, if he had a history of violence etc ??

All these things have a bearing on an officers actions and when you only have a split second to make a decision it can go horribly wrong.

It's one of the things that really wind me up about cases here in the UK of police shooting suspects.
Officers being slated for shooting someone who pretended he had a a gun but turns out it was a chair leg ... In the moment the officer thought it was a shotgun ...

Hindsight is a marvellous thing .....

As for guns in th US I don't understand the opposition to tightening gun laws.

Having a cooling off period between buying and collecting is a good thing. So is basic checks on the persons suitability and why on earth are children allowed to use them ?

The 2nd Amendment restates our God given right to self defense and the tools that we need to do that. In actuality there are no limits on Freedom of Speech; examples such as 'Yelliing fire in a crowded theatre" or libelous statements do not fall under Freedom of Speech, they fall under inciting a riot or well, libelous speech.

I have quite a few guns, so what. I am a law abiding citizen and I do it because I can. No one has a right to limit your freedoms unless your freedoms are interfering with others...the 2nd Amendment in no way limits anyone's freedoms.

Foreigners have many odd perceptions of the law. In my state, if you use a gun in a crime, if you are a felon in possession of a gun, if you supply a felon a gun etc...your butt is headed to prison for a long time...

I carry a gun. I'm licensed and I have 30 years of military training as well....do want to know a secret? Most cops are shot with their own gun: They kill themselves accidently with it, their significant other shoots them with it, they commit suicide with it or the perp takes it away from them and shoots them with it. A police uniform is no guarantee that they know anything about guns, most don't.

I have had to pull a gun on bad people twice in 10 years, once when 4 thugs came at me in a parking lot in St Louis, and once when a man tried to get in my truck in Memphis, I did not have to shoot either time, the very fact that I was armed scared the crap out them...BTW, most cops in our country are all for citizens owning guns, it's only the political chiefs of police who are against it.

Bad people will always be able to get guns, honest people had better be able to defend themselves.

I remember when Sir George Harrison was attacked in his own home and his wife bashed the attacker with a lamp and hurt him badly, a local police official said he wasn't sure if she would be charged for fighting the intruder...I mean really? In most of the US that intruder would have likely been dead.

A crazy man attacked his former coworkers in Oklahoma today, he killed one and was attacking another when the CEO of the company shot him. How long would it have taken the police to get there? How many would he have killed?

Well, I'm sticking to my guns..ya'll can take your chances..

Nope, ya'll can remain unarmed if you like, I'm sticking to my guns.

That being the case I am quite comfortable with you owning & carrying.

I've been told this by a friend who was a cop (one of the hero-types) and herin lies my point with the whole thing- I'm all FOR gun ownership, but like owning a car or a plane you should have a license, and in obtaining that license you should be able to prove that 1) you have no history of violent physical abuse and 2) that you are proficient with said weapon & able to clean and store it.
The problem with this is, many (I say MANY, not most) law enforcement personel would not be able to pass these simple requirements. Just like many drivers would not be able to pass a realistic driver training course that included provisions to teach accident avoidence. Why? Money. We NEED to sell cars, and we need to employ cops at the lowest wage possible.
Planes? Well, they are really stringent there. Why there, you ask? Again, money. A crappy pilot can & probably will cause epic property damage.
An idiot with a gun or a car will just kill or maim a few people. :o

I want to make a point, I'm not arguing with anyone. Let's pretend we're old friends discussing things over a cup of coffee......Automobiles are not covered in the Constitution, at all. You can go anywhere in this country without a driver's license, licenses are really about revenue and not safety. Take a bus, plane, etc..no license needed.

On a practical level I have no problem with the licensing of honest citizens, but it needs to be a "shall issue" license and not at the whim of some unelected or low level official...Americans would not stand for having to get a permit to buy a computer and hook up to the internet,,,,nor should they have to prove anything to own a gun. Other than they are not a felon or otherwise prohibited, ie. mentally ill, etc. there is no reason to prohibit someone form exercising their rights,,,as to "assault weapons", a made up term, very few people are actually killed with them, cheap revolvers are the gun of choice for most criminals.

Illinois has some very restrictive gun laws, and the city of Chicago even more restrictive and they have done nothing to curb the murders in the low income neighborhoods,,,,but they have disarmed the majority of the population that is law abiding, the same in DC, and I suspect, the same in Boston. I don't know all the laws in Massachusetts regarding guns, but I bet criminals have no real problems getting them.

Crime rates have been dropping steadily since the 70s in this country and an even more marked decline as more and more states have adopted CCW laws. Criminals are scared of getting shot, they pick their targets, the same with those crazies who have shot up schools, theaters and playgrounds. Gun-free zones are an invitation to these nuts.
