A sort of "Bondish" long- barreled Colt

Some of you may find this of interest: I'm sure most of the members know that Ian Fleming owned several guns, among which was a Colt Official Police, Serial number 718128, with which he posed for a photo often used on the books:

Recently, I came across a WW2 vintage Official Police with a 6 inch Heavy Barrel, shown here:
005-5.jpg
So,what makes it "Bondish", one might inquire?
Well, we all know Fleming planned a covert op concerning Gibraltar code named Golden Eye which he named his Jamaican home, Goldeneye after. Here's the butt of the gun:
020-1.jpg
and ,here is the last three digits of the serial number:
017.jpg

Kind of interesting to a long time(1961) Bond fan like me... :) :)
So, what is the real story? Well, 007 as the last three digits of the serial is pure coincidence, and the G E stands for General Electric to which this Colt. along with others. was supplied during the war for guards to carry. It was well cared for and used very little.
I hope this has been of interest to somebody. :)

Tecolote

Nice with and interesting little back story and some Bond related details, I just wish we were allowed to own handguns here in the UK but due to the occasional idiot out there they were banned around 1997.

That revolver was destined to fall into the collection of a Bond fan!!!! What a great coincidence.

Are handguns legal in Northern Ireland then?

Yes, and always have been the ban did not affect here , we have to have air weapons on certificate but as long as you are a member of a club or have a legitimate reason for personal protection, Prison Officer, some retired police, certain Civil Servants, and others under known threat, pistols are legally available , they all have to be ballistically tested and recorded as well. I have three with a .44 Magnum on the way ;)

Well , you live and learn :)) I can understand why Police/army/ Prison Officers
And a like obviously need a personal protection weapon, but I had no idea the
Latest legislation didn't apply over here !
To be honest given our past I find it a little crazy that people are allowed to
Hold guns ( apart from shotguns or hunting riffles ) for any other reason. :))
Still we live in a crazy country. ;)

The legal weapons have never been a problem and of them shotguns have been the most abused and that is very rarely.

Are you certain you cannot think of another reason why a non-official peacekeeper might need a gun? :)

Any way back to the original thread ,that pistol ,looks very similar to the one Bond (Brosnan) borrows in DAD ??
By the way, did I tell you, I was "Mad"?

Always shaken: the gun in DAD is the main competitor to the Colt OP, the Smith & Wesson Model 10HB or Military & Police. The HB also stands for Heavy Barrel, a feature Smith added circa 1959, the standard Model 10 having a slim tapered version. Both are fine examples of the gunmaker's art. Here's alink:

The S&W M10HB used to be standard issue for armed police officers in the Met until the Glock 17 was adopted.
