Clark Gregg reprises his role from The Avengers as Agent Phil Coulson as he assembles a group of agents from the worldwide law enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. I saw Man of Steel with my brother today and we both enjoyed it very much. Zack Snyder and David Goyer have retooled the character for the post-9/11 generation and the end result is a far more serious movie than prior Superman features that still manages to avoid sinking to the brooding, depressing depths of Nolan's Batman films.

The acting is very good across the board. Cavill makes a suitably square-jawed but also compassionate and likeable Superman; Michael Shannon's Zod is a villian literally defined by his genetic coding, Amy Adams' Lois Lane avoids becoming a damsel in distress like her predecessors and Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are all effective as Clark's biological, surrogate and virtual parents.

The action is quite visceral and relentless and the big climax evokes all sorts of 9/11 imagery. It almost gets overwhelming at times but then again, we're basically witnessing an alien invasion of Earth being fought by super-powered beings so while it is extreme, it doesn't feel out of place. Superman's one on one battle with Zod was quite satisfying and emotionally moving at the end and the final scenes of the film where we finally see Clark Kent in a familiar job surrounded by his new friends and colleagues really made me smile.

While I knew Zack Snyder would be able to pull off a visually striking film, I was worried that David Goyer would turn in a sub-par story. Happily, they both embraced the comics, liberally cherry-picking storylines, events and even visual and design queues from many classic Superman storylines (John Byrne and Mark Waid's runs on the comics especially come to mind). The film is also peppered with lots of little easter eggs for DC comics fans if you know where to look.

So overall, WB finally gets one right as this is easily the best DC adaptation they've done in a long time, surpassing the misguided, miscast and generally timid Green Lantern and far more satisfying that Nolan's bloated bastardization of the Batman mythos that was Dark Knight Rises. Bring on the Justice League.

Saw Man of Steel yesterday for Father's Day, and I think your review pretty much mirrors my thoughts on the film. One small complaint is that I thought the climatic battle went on a bit too long. But overall, I found MOS to be an enjoyable and satisfying movie, easily the best Superman film since the 1978 version starring Christopher Reeve.

I saw MOS last night, and I liked it--especially because of such tweaks to the mythos as showing Krypton as a eugenic dystopia and having Lois know Superman's identity from the beginning--but I found myself troubled by it. I think I figured out why, and I think this is why so many critics have given it middling reviews: there's just no letup. No sooner does Krypton explode than we see the adult Clark trying to find himself and right after he puts on the blue suit for the first time General Zod is on the scene demanding that Supes surrender. It seemed to me a lot of heart was sacrificed to the action, and after a while I found myself feeling a little numbed. Plus. . .the ultimate fate of Zod is arguably a violation of everything Superman is about.

Again, though, on balance I like the film: good performances, good production design, nice hints as to what's to come (bring on the guy behind those LexCorp signs). . .it just needed more heart and soul.

With regard to Zod's fate, a couple of observations....
During John Byrne's run on Superman in the mid 1980s, there was a storyline in which Superman crossed paths with Zod and several other Kryptonian criminals. The storyline ended in shocking fashion with Superman killing Zod and his cohorts by exposing them to Kryptonite. While the specifics of how Zod died are different, the event itself was not at all unprececented in comics lore.

I also find it interesting that all these critics seem to be up in arms with Superman killing Zod, yet no one seemed to blink so much as an eyelash when Batman - another character who famously vowed not to kill - offed criminals indiscriminately during Tim Burton's two films.

Between the darker, more cynical world we live in and rival Marvel characters having no compunction about killing (either in the films or the comics - how many people has Wolverine eviscerated with those claws, or how many terrorists did Iron Man blow up and burn to bits when escaping the cave the first movie) the "boy scout" code of Superman and other DC characters has become more dated, unrealistic and downright quaint.

The cool reception audiences gave Bryan Singer's far less violent Superman Returns drives home the the fact that Superman really needed to change and fit in with the times to remain relevant, especially on the big screen.

    Man of Steel - IMAX

Saw Man of Steel over the weekend, I have mixed feelings about the film, but my 18 year old son loved it.

Let me start with the good, all the performances were excellent, they have cast the right actor for Superman. The Clark Kent scenes, many told in flashback were very good and in many cases very moving. The tornado scene with Clark Kent's father was particularly compelling. I also enjoyed the soundtrack.

Unfortunately there were several things I didn't care for. I have read some Superman comics, but would never claim to be an expert, however, for Superman I thought it was too dark. I didn't care for Superman's father popping up every now and then to help move the plot along, didn't think the Lois Lane and Clark Kent relationship was developed enough. She is a reporter investigating him, he meets her and talks about his life and she suddenly backs off the story and has feelings for him? However, my biggest disappointment was the action scenes. Early on the military knew bullets did not damage General Zod and his forces, yet they continue to send in solders with rifles to shoot at Zod and his forces. The fight scenes with Superman and his foes, had no clarity. Two super beings speeding at each other, a collision, repercussions from the collision and then the building they fall into collapses. The fight was never very compelling, because we don't really see the pain or anger, just some CGI action. Lastly, although I am not a Superman expert, I think the climactic scene was out of character for Superman.

    Iron Man 3

Haven’t posted any reviews lately, so I will add a quick one for Iron Man 3. Although I enjoyed the film, I thought the army of Iron Men took away from the action scenes. I also thought the villain reveal about two-thirds of the way through the film was very disappointing. They had a great villain, should have stuck with him, rather than play the plot twist they did. Despit those two disappointments, I had fun watching the film, Tony Stark is an interesting character.
