Home Cinema

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has a home cinema set up upon which they watch Bond or any other movies? I'm thinking projector & big pull down screen. If so are they any good?

    Me and the other Half have a BluRay in our Flat that fits well with our smallish Flat Screen TV -{

I have a 42 inch LCD tv, BR DVD player and a 5:1 surround sound system with sub woofer all powered by a Yamaha amp, gives a nice warm sound, but have been impressed with latest soundbars that are available.

My room is 13x18 ft ,I have a 84" projector screen ,hd projector (optoma, ceiling mounted )6.1 surround sound (dts hd ,mordaunt short speakers ,rel subwoofer, sony 1040 av amp sony blu-Ray )
Picked up the bond 50 blu-Ray box set for £40.
Yes , I would recommend a projector ,not for daytime use of course ( apart from when an important footy game is on)
The new 3d HD optima can be picked up for less than £1000
And bond in hd picture and sound is fantastic.
I would also recommend a soundbar to anyone with a flatscreen tv as the speakers in those tv's are crap and a soundbar is a great improvement on them.

Only a small room, about 12 feet square. I would really love a home cinema system but fear that the space I have available doesn't make this a viable option. I do have a 42" Sony LCD which I bought new about a year ago.

Look for a short throw projector - there are quite a few on the market ,they don't need to be as far away from the screen to throw a huge pictures as normal PJ. Philips have just brought out a new pj that sits just under the screen and projects upwards, for sound the bose cinemate is expensive (£550) but gives great cinema style surround sound from 2 small speakers and a sub.
I used to have a smaller room than yours with a 92" screen in it and 5.1 speakers ,so it is possible.

I've gone back to a 46 inch tv after having a sony projector! I miss the big screen so much I had a 100 inch image and used it for the Xbox 360 (assassins Creed, tiger woods) as well. Once you get used to it it's hard to stop thinking about it. It really does feel like a home cinema and even though the picture quality on my LCD is better I would go back in a heart beat. (Wife say so).
I also have a Denon AVR 3313 receiver B&W CDM 7 special edition main speakers including a timber matched centre and DS6 THX rears I also spent a lot on cables as it's really important.
    To conclude Get The Prooooojjjjjjeeeecttttor!!!!!
Best thing I ever bought. (Get a Stuart Screen).

My home theater setup consists of a 63" 3D plasma, a vanilla 5.1 surround sound system and a Panasonic BluRay player. I sit about 7-8 feet away from it and with the lights out and the room darkened to where I can't see the the TV's bezel, it makes for a great, film like experience. While you can get a larger image with a projector, personally, I don't think you can beat the warmth and richness of color that a plasma brings to the image and it is my preferred way to watch movies. Really a shame that they're no longer in fashion and hardly being produced anymore.

Im currently rocking a old 52" Sony (wall mounted) with Amplifier and 5.1 surround sound via a 3 speaker sound bar and 2 rear speakers. Its about 6 years old now and after a recent visit to Sony / Samsung stores etc think maybe about time to change things since everything advanced since I moved into my new house.

I was in a Sony store a few weeks back and they had Skyfall blu-ray on a 80" which looked incredible.

So what's the biggest conventional TV available? Though I'm not clued up, 80" sounds as good as a projector system to me.

Biggest conventional TV is a 103' Panasonic plasma - very expensive!

To get the full home cinema effect, I throw pop corn round the room.
With plenty of coke poured on the floor to get that lovely sticky effect.
Then try and break a chair or two, and of course TALK throughout
The most important scenes. :)) , and if lucky try and have some
Naughty groping in the back row. ;)
I think BL, is still using shadow puppets . ;)

Depends on the size and shape of your room how much better.

But yes in general a soundbar will be noticeably better than just your TV's speakers due to the size, wattage, and number of speakers.

A few months ago I was killing time in Selfridges, I admired a stunning 85 inch curved Samsung 4K TV. Salesperson jumped on me and gave me the lowdown (cough bullsh@t). Anyhow it was mine for a lowly price of £35,000 if memory serves correct. Think I joked I might consider one for the spare room (which didnt go down well)
