Just visited 'Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond style in Rotterdam

DutchfingerDutchfinger Holland With LovePosts: 1,240MI6 Agent
As some people might or might not be aware of, lots of the original objects and clothing from 50 years of Bond movies are currently being showcased in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Here's the information on the exposition:

http://www.kunsthal.nl/designing007/en/

Today, me and my girlfriend went to this exhibition in Rotterdam. Boy, and I have to say, I was like a child in a candystore! This was truly an amazing expierence! They had so much items that were showcased, storyboards, drawings, original clothing of the various actors that played a role in the movies, you name it!
Unfortunatly, we were not allowed to take pictures in the main museum. :( So, you'll have to take my word for most of the stuff I'm explaining here :))

When you entered, you first got into this cinema hall where they were showing the Everything Or Nothing documentary, as I had already seen that one, we simply skipped that. Right in the back of that hall, was the legendary DB5 with a Sean Connery mannequins fitted with the Goldfinger Clothing. That's one of the few pictures I was actually allowed to make:

IMAG5146.jpg

Then we entered the main attraction, which were seperated into several rooms:

- The Gold Room
Here they showed pretty much everything gold, the golden girl from Goldfinger was replicated as a mannequins and immediatly invited you into Bond's world. The original Golden Gun was shown here, along with the drawings for Fort Knox, one of the Gold bars from Goldfinger, Oddjobs hat, and some prices that the Brocolli's won. They also had replica clothing of both Pussy Galore and Goldfinger, these were only among the very few objects that were replicated. On the wall the projected the scenes from the man with the golden gun and Goldfinger.

- M's Room
Here they actually had the real leather doors used in the movies, some clothing of Moneypenny, various passports and papers of Bond that were used in the movies. The Bernard Lee painting seen in the background of TWINE etc...

- Q's room
This room was great! There were to many gadgets to name that were here, you won't believe how much EON actually kept intact over all those years! They had the original attache case, the real sniper rifle from LTK, models of the Lotus Esprit, both underwater and land. The gun and radio from Skyfall, the explosives used in the PTS of DAD, the 'man on holiday briefcase from Q in LTK'.. Heck, pretty much all the gadgets you could think of were here! There were just to much to name!

- Casino room
Another great room. This was one of the best presentations. They had the Casino Royale poker table in the middle along with mannequins of all the Poker players in their original clothing. Than around that room they had a lot of mannequins in their casino clothing. Such as Sylvia Trench, Domino, Largo, Plenty O'Toole, Tracy, Tiffany Case, Lupe Lamora, Pam Bouvier, Elektra King, Severine, Eve, Valentin Zukovsky and Bond's tux from DN, OP, LTK, TWINE and SF. There was also the faberege egg and the dices game from OP and big models of the casino's for Casino Royale and Skyfall.

- Space room (pretty much all Moonraker)
Here they had Bond's space suit along with lots of the space models that Derrick Meddings used in the actual film.

- Huge hallway with more stuff
Then came a large path leading you through all kinds of storyboards and the actual motor bike from TND was there as well. Along with more original clothing from Solitaire with here taro cards, Barbara Bach and Bond's egypt clothing from TSWLM, models of vehicles and such used in TLD and much more...

- Snow Room
All snow themed Bond movie stuff were here. Snowscooters, Bond's clothing from TSWLM and FYEO, a model of the ice palace in DAD. Ski's, storyboard drawings of several scenes.

-Miscellaneous clothing and objects
In this final room they had all kinds of stuff. More clothing from a lot of the villians like DN, Sanchez, Rosa Klebb (along with here real shoe!), even Gustav Graves's sci-fi suit was there along with that free running guy from CR. Jaws's teeth, a model of Moonraker's cable cart in RIO. Pretty much all of Hale Berry's outfits (strangely enough didn't see her orange bikini though, but the rest was there) There was lots and lots more here.

I'm sure I haven't even named half of the stuff that was present there, and I didn't even talk about the great giftshop that also had lots of merchendise, I picked myself up a nice Bond encyclopedia! All in all a wonderfull expierence, I would recommend everyone that somehow has a chance to visit this to go see it! (It will only run untill february though)

Yeah that wasn't really the point either... Most other models in the musuem itself didn't even have a face, they just had hair slightly resembling the characters they were meant to be. Largo's dol dit have the eyepatch for example... But it was mainly about showcasing original Bond props and clothing.

You mean the black book they sell (about 30 euros)? Really something you should pick up when you are there. I've been to the exposition 5 times already and plan to go a few more times before it moves to another city.

Managed to take the better half to this at the beginning of November. What a joy!
We were both mesmerised from the start. Sounds like we were lucky as we managed to take a number of photos with both iPad and mobile phones only time there was any intervention was when the flash went off. I will upload a few photos when I've worked out how to do this.
Would recommend booking online first we got a great deal which included a reduced cost Vesper Martini!! Definitely recommended but only if you aren't driving!!

I got a pretty good deal myself. I am a student and for whatever reason students had a discount only having to pay a 6 euro entree fee. Intrestingly enough, they didn't even check if I really was a student, so that shows that people could just buy tickets for 6 euro's without being checked on it...

Her bikini is in the very first display case along with the new sunspel and la perla swimming trunks and Honey's bikini. The display case is situated on the right side of the large cinema screen when you enter the exhibition. IF you really missed that it can mean only one thing.... You will have to visit it again :))

    DF, if you find yourself in the UK you should give Bond in Motion a Visit -{

Very pleased to see you have seen this DFinger! Your reaction to it is very similar to mine from when I saw it a couple of years ago in London when it first started. I too was reduced to an overexcited 8 year old me inside on seeing the A.T.A.C. and Derek Meddings miniatures of the Boatus and one of the Moonraker Space shuttles amongst everything else. I was completely blown away by the DAD Ice Palace. I had been convinced it was all CG in the film. The miniature was def a centerpiece of the winter gallery.

From Pedro Jnr's photos it looks like a few more pieces have been added to the exhibition from Skyfall since it started off, which is pleasing.

I fully agree with Capt Scarlet too about Bond In Motion. - Its a much smaller exhibition, make sure you have other things you want to see and do while in London, but its well worth a visit to wonder around Bond's transportation history. - The National Gallery is a good addition, and not just for its use in Skyfall. Amazing paintings!
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

Nice to see more members on this forum visited it in either London or even here in Holland. I have heared of the Bond in Motion, I have discussed going there one day with my girlfriend. She's quite the Harry Potter fan herself, she would love to visit the studios there one day. What I have with Bond she basicly has with Harry Potter. Which is why were watching both the Bond's and Harry Potters at the moment, probably trying to convince eachother and constantly throwing trivia out to eachother... In it's last week in Rotterdam, I finally got the chance to visit Designing 007 50 years of Bond Style.

    CC83D9AE-027A-4319-9D3B-20DB4D41F810.jpg

The exhibition was pretty crowed (also with guards). As Dutchfinger already made an excellent post on this, I will keep my comments somewhat short. I am more a James Bond literature fan than the movies except for the Sean period and OHMSS. However I Liked it a lot especially the more historic items as M's room and the Goldfinger room.

I also attended the Bond in Motion in London in May 2014. To be frankly I liked that exhibition a bit more. I guess I am also somewhat of a petrolhead.

    Here are some snapshots:

Ofcourse there is always the exit with the shopping items. I added some books (vintage 007 set) to my collection.

However, there was one title missing. :(

If you guy's can guess which title is missing I will reward you with the small booklet on the exhibition in Dutch). I will even pay for postage. See it as my appreciation for this great forum. First one takes the price.

It says "Drawings Goldfinger" referring to the drawings of an unused gadget laden van from Goldfinger that is in the same display. However, there are quite a few errors on the signs at the exposition. I believe the re-breather that you see is from DAD and not Thunderball.

I went to this exhibition when it was in Melbourne last year, it was lots of fun for Bond-aficionados (like myself) but there was definitely NO photographs allowed. Security were standing at the doorway to each room making sure this rule was enforced.

In Rotterdam there was also security cruising. But I also saw people walking with camera's and taking pictures. I just took some quick shots with the Iphone. Did not want to take the risk that I had to delete my pictures.

There was only one warning sign at the start of the tour.

Hi Jan, you seem to be missing Xxx right?

That is quick. Bingo. If you want the booklet. PM me your adress and I will send it you. Cheap postage!!

Hi Jan, I edited my response to give someone else a chance to win. I won the booklet myself at a 007 quiz a few weeks ago. If there are any people who want one as well, just let me know, I've won 4.

Ok. That is a true sport. Anyone else up for the question of the missing title?
