I've recently started reading the books; got them for christmas, and am up to Moonraker.
My image of Bond is constantly changing depending on the events in the book, who was in the movie of that book (particularly if it's similar) and how Bond is responding, acting etc.
Like for example, if Bond is being ruthless it might be Dalton, if he's being cold maybe Craig, if he's being flirtatious or making love it's Rog, Lazenby packing big punches. It all depends.
But on other occassions, it's a slim, dark haired man with a stern mouth, rigid nose and pale-ish skin. Oh, and of course the long scar on his right cheek. Because of this though, I find it hard to imagine Connery.
But I too imagine similar bond girls and villains, some with slight variations, but all very similar.
Sean Connery looks a fair bit like Ian Flemming's description in the novels (at least I remember it to be similar ) so my mind usually summons and image of Connery's Bond. haha, even the voice )
Leiter, his CIA companion on some of the most thrilling cases in Bond's career, grinned and thrust the steel hook that was his right hand under Bond's arm. 'Take it easy, friend. Dick Tracey will tell all when we get out of here. Bags are out front. Let's go.'

Did Fleming say Bond looked like an "old" Hoagy Charmichael? The years of living really made a difference in how old Hoagland looked, resembling either Kramer from the Seinfeld TV show, or even Jimmy Durante! Check out my avatar to see a young version, more consistent with Fleming's description of (classically or conventionally) handsome.

When I read the novels now, Dalton always seems to fit for me, then Craig (but he would more so if he had dark hair - which I can visualize in my mind). It's just not the looks, it's also their character. Their interpretation just seems to fit the character more for me than the other actors. Sometimes Stewart Granger works because he's from the cold war era and he looked like a more tough version of Fleming.
I have only read four, and I just tend to usually see a generic bloke as he is described by Fleming, no one in particular, just someone made up in my mind. Then at certain moments in the books I am reminded of the actor who played him for that film.
But the really odd thing is, when reading Moonraker, I saw Connery pretty much all the way through. But then I guess it doesn't really have much relation to the film.
To repeat what I said in this thread five years ago ( ): since I first became infected with the Bond virus in the 60s, it was always Sean Connery's face and, naturally, voice that I envisaged when reading the books and fifty years later ( ) it still is, especially on those Fleming scenes that were filmed as per the novels (meeting Honey; dining with Dr No; chatting with Kerim, Tatiana and Goldfinger; playing cards with Largo (and how!); etc etc) even when it wasn't Connery in the respective films (most of OHMSS; dialogue with Mr Big and Solitaire; chatting with Columbo and Kristatos; the 2nd half of CR06; etc etc).

I never picture any of the Bond actors either, but I gotta admit, my Bond looks REALLY close to Isaacs too.
I'm fascinated by the fact that so many picture one of the Bond actors though. I've even tried to before and I just can't.
