Watson's dressed like he belongs in the Conan Doyle Victorian setting. Apart from that waterproof jacket of course.

A 1916 silent movie featuring Sherlock Holmes - long presumed lost - is due to have its premiere in Paris. It stars a man who changed the way we see Conan Doyle's famous sleuth forever. He was the first great Sherlock Holmes. But few will have heard of US actor William Gillette. Not only was Gillette the Benedict Cumberbatch of his day. He was the actor who decided - perhaps more than any other - how Holmes looks and talks, and whose relationship with Conan Doyle may have breathed new life into the Sherlock Holmes franchise.

Article and pics from the set in Bristol. An entire street was transformed to look as though it belonged in the 19th century. Hordes of extras piled on to the street, as the producers pulled out all the stops by recruiting a few horses and carts to be part of the action.

Ian McKellen has posted a clip on his official Twitter account from his new film Mr Holmes, a cinematic twist on the most famous detective. An ageing Sherlock has retired to a remote farmhouse to face the end of his days with only the company of his housekeeper and her son.

Guardian interview with Ian McKellen on his new film role. Mr Holmes, has its world premiere at the Berlin film festival on Sunday and offers a vision of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective living quietly in retirement in Sussex, keeping bees. The film is about a crime, but also about age, unreliable memory and the power of the past.

An historian has unearthed the first unseen Sherlock Holmes story in more than 80 years that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote to help save a town bridge. Walter Elliot, 80, found the 1,300-word tale starring the famous detective in a collection of short stories written for a local bazaar. A second book containing the lost Sherlock Holmes story ('Sherlock Holmes: Discovering the Border Burghs and, by deduction, the Brig Bazaar') has been discovered in Selkirk, bearing the signature 'Arthur Conan Doyle'. The second book belonged to late Selkirk centenarian Alex Cuthill, who inscribed his name on the inside cover. The mystery deepens.

Steven Moffat has confirmed the setting of the special Sherlock episode. He is quoted, "We wouldn't have done the story we're doing, and the way we're doing it, if we didn't have this special. It's not part of the run of three episodes. Mark Gatiss and me wanted to do this, but it had to be special, it had to be a separate entity on its own."
