What exactly is wrong with Dr Holly Goodhead?

CC has more sex appeal than Lois Chiles.

I don't find her acting wooden, it's just that she lacked chemistry with Sir Roger. By contrast his scenes with the infinitely more appealing (just IMO :D ) Corinne Clery are far better - they have real chemistry, partly because CC has more sex appeal than Lois Chiles.

I agree entirely, with the exception of the word infinitely. I have always particularly liked Bond and Corinne's final scene together, when he says "Thank you", it is a tender moment made real by their chemistry.

She's one of my least favorite Bond girls, but I may be too difficult on my opinion of her as I focus too much on "Hang on James!" and "It's entering the earth's atmosphere :o "

I think the scenes between Bond and Corinne are nicely done and as you say his "Thank you" upon leaving is tender and poignant. He knows the danger he's put her in and perhaps how things will now turn out for her. (A classic example of Alex Trevelyan's reference in Goldeneye to all the women Bond has failed to protect).

There's nothing exactly wrong with the character or the performance, but there's nothing exactly right with them either. Holly Goodhead is simply a rather two-dimensional character sandwiched between two much more interesting female leads (Major Anya Amasova and Melina Havelock).

To be honest - there is some truth to this. Amasova and Havelock are far more interesting characters.I don't think bigging the girl up was ever a priority in MR - less jokes and slapstick I suppose.

I thought she was very good.

However, am I the only one who cringes when RM does "love scenes"?

I just hate them, in every Bond film he does, they just feel "weird" to me for some reason. I get rather embarrased when watching them, sometimes I even have to look away (I never even look away at the worst horror films!).

IMHO, Moore was not always blessed with great Bond girl actresses....
    Jane Seymour was his best.
Britt Ekland was okay, but her part as written was silly.
Barbra Bach was , umm... nice looking.
    Lois Chiles was, umm...there.
    Carole Bouquet was very... sincere.
Maud Adams was kind of attractive in a sedate sort of way...
    Tanya Roberts was pretty (screetchy).
    :))

Man, you guys are brutal! I personally thought she played her part very well. I think it's very hard to play an empowered feminist who's also sexy (try finding this mix in real life). Her character had just enough sass and #itchiness to play off of Bond's womanizing ego. I put her beauty in the top 5 of all the Bond girls in the franchise (maybe top 3)

Well said, she provides abit of gravitas in a loony film with Moore hamming it up to heaven. Much misunderstood.

I thought the same, she does a very good job of playing the part she was given, she does not come off as annoying "female Bond equivalent" like some do. But also she is not a screeching wallflower.

She has some decent lines, can fight a bit, and she has knowledge of some things on the mission that Bond doesn't. Good balance I thought.

I thought she played the part very well and in the early scenes she came across very attractive. I love how she looks as Bond focuses in on her in Rio at the telescope thingy.
The only bit I hate is the way she says "hang on James" atop the cable car. It just sounds rubbish. Mind you, that whole scene is dreadful in my book. :#

Not bad - in fact a step up from Solitaire, Goodnight, and Sutton - just bland.

Yeah I can see where you are coming from. Maybe as she was supposed to be a doctor the part went to somebody that looked more suitable in that role?

I wish I had the fine discernment like other experts on this board to tell what's wooden acting, boring, etc., so that I can join the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences...or perhaps replace Roger Ebert at the Chicago Sun Times. These are Bond movies for goodness sake. I think Lois Chiles was gorgeous, far more than many other Bond girls. On top of that, she carried playing sophisticated, elegant and smart very well. American Bond girls are my least favorite, particularly when playing the hyper-independent type like Pam Bouvier, or those who fall into ditziness when trying too hard to be brazen and independent like Stacey Sutton and Christmas Jones. Holly Goodhead was all of that while still maintaining a strong yet attractive femininity...and did I say she was gorgeous?

I'm no expert on acting, that's for sure, and I can only react to what I see on the screen as a viewer. Watching Ms. Chiles as Dr. Goodhead, I feel she is attractive but her character doesn't really stand out in any way. So to me she's rather boring. Maybe it's the way the character of Dr. Goodhead is written, but I feel at least some of it is attributable to her acting. Not that she's bad, just bland IMO. I have seen similar comments around here about Carole Bouquet as Melina Havelock in FYEO. I don't happen to agree, but I can see how some might feel that way. That's the way it is with opinions - they differ.

Carole was given a meatier character. Lois was shortchanged.

Maybe it is part of my upbringing but I can tell good actresses from bad. Perhaps it was because I shared a flat with jobbing actors in Islington. I can separate those who read off the page and those who try that little bit harder. Those who convince and those who don't I can separate my Madonnas from Eva Green. And she doesn't do so bad our Holly.

As for the person who rubbished the eighties actresses. I found them to be three dimensional and that includes Kara Milovy, Octopussy and Pam Bouvier.

Of course my argument falls down with Lupe Lamora :)) :)) :))

A line from Christopher Wood's Moonraker as Bond and Holly destroy the remaining spheres:

"She spoke urgently, but without any edge of panic. Bond, who loved order and calm in a woman, loved her at that moment."

Some might find her too calm or wooden, but I would say Lois nailed the part if that's what the screenwriter originally had in mind.

I tend to agree with Superado here that Holly was a perfect blend of brains, beauty and sass without being overly independent and "equal of Bond"

I'm a big fan/supporter of female action hero movies (SALT, LONG KISS GOODNIGHT) but not necessarily when I'm watching a Bond film. Jinx and Wai Lin were a bit over the top for me.
