Sandpaper and acetone. Use sparingly and apply to the jacket and work in small areas at a time. You'll want to distress areas that would be in the most contact with surfaces and objects like elbows, shoulders, and most edges and seams. Most importantly, go slowly. Remember, you can always distress further, but you can't undo it.

There are a number of threads over at the FilmJackets forum as well as Club Obi Wan (Indygear) that discuss distressing leather jackets as well. I would highly recommend reading through those first before diving in.

    Kind regards,

DBS has given you a good starting point. However, if you are to use sandpaper, make sure it is a fine grit and be careful around seams. Rubbing alcohol is good for removing shine and acetone will remove dye. You can also use different types of leather dressings to darken the leather (as well as nourish it) and also use shoe polish to manipulate the color of the jacket.

Depending on what type of leather and the way the jacket was tanned also comes into play. Usually when you use any of the above methods on a chrome tanned jacket, you'll notice that the hide looks grey. In this instance I've seen Rick over at FilmJackets basically paint the leather to achieve his desired result.

Even if you just get the jacket wet and wear it while it dries, the jacket will conform to your body and gives it a lot of character. Please avoid putting your jacket in the washer and then the dryer on high heat 8-) ....I've seen a few people on the other forum destroy a perfectly good jacket doing this :#

Wear it daily for half a century that should do it.

Actually I worked out what Levis did with the second more distressed version of teh Menlo - they were actually black not brown hence why they were more distressed (that will get everyone grabbing their Menlos for a closer inspection!). I checked my paperwork does not actually say what colour it is. But a close inspection one a certain parts proves my point (well on mine anyway). There is sod all leather left on it so not really fussed but does explain the extreme dsitressing

    Cheers :-)
