As many have said the strength of the Bond films is that there is something for
    Everyone, realistic to fantasy. -{
No series of films have lasted as long, with one of the reasons being that the
Character and films can change. MR is an over the top fantasy Bond, might not be
to everyone's taste, but for the public, it was what they wanted and made a fortune
at the box office, and EON has to make a profit to keep making the films. So perhaps
Some of the money made from MR & YOLT, helped to finance CR, QOS and now
    Spectre ? :D

No other Fictional Character has remained as consistent throughout the Years -{ And that is Part of Bonds massive Success :)

If Fleming were alive today, I reckon that he would have a very big Smile on his Face :)

Another point in defence of Moonraker :
The 70s was a very drab time for the UK. Political unrest, massive unemployment
Loads of strikes and from old TV footage everything very, very dull ! :#
So to be able to sit in the cinema for a couple of hours. Watching some Beautiful
People in gorgeous exotic locations, brilliant stunts and action sequences, with a
Few well placed jokes. Helped you forget about the reality of 70s Britain, so in many
Ways films like Moonraker helped the National vibe. Showing that Britain was still
Important in the world, which I'm certain helped national pride.
So far from deriding MR perhaps we should hold it in high regard as " The best of
British" -{ a tonic for a nation, when it needed it. :)

It's similar to the Novels. Fleming wrote them when Britain was still using Rationing, and when the Hardships of WW2 were still around. So the Books were a way for People to escape that for half an Hour or so.

There's a programme on BBC 2 about how we lived through the decades, The
50's was amazing ! :o How little people had to live on, even basics like eggs.
