One of our MP's in the 1970s was Airey Neave, who was one of the few men to have escaped from Colditz. He was a barrister and, in a turn of fate, was recruited by MI9 (an arm I think of British Intelligence) and was sent to interview some of the ex-German army officers at the Nurenberg trials. He wrote two fascinating books on his wartime experiences. He was murdered in a terrorist attack in London in 1979. He lived, and is buried, close to where I live. I too often wonder how his experiences shaped him too.

The Problem with many of our Politicians, is that a lot of them have Elite Backgrounds and have no real Connection with the Electorate.

I still can't forget the conservative MP who stood down because he couldn't live on
( With various top ups on his salary ) £140,000 a year ! :)) many workers in the UK
Have to try and live on around £12,00 a year.
Perhaps MPs could be paid Twice the average industrial wage ? I think that's pretty
Generous, and might give them an idea of the problems the average voter has to deal
    With. :D

Love the new avatar, AOS- "The Trap Door" was a pretty good series (I remember playing the Spectrum game back in the 80s).

The press intrusion was out of order. Sure, he should be able to handle being followed around & photographed but paparazzi camping out on his girlfriend's 102-year old grandmother's doorstep was taking it too far.

I still can't understand why TV stations have to have a balanced view
on politics, yet papers are allowed to be right wing or left wing ! 8-)
Personally I think he knows Labour will take more than five years to
Recover, so he may put his name back in the hat after the next election. ;)

I think that Andy Burnham is probably the best qualified candidate and of course he was the only one to have previously run during the 2010 Labour leadership contest. Due to changes in the Labour leadership rules in 2014 the power of the unions is much less and so I think that a Blairite like Burnham is in with more of a chance this time around. Red ED showed that when Labour moves further to the left it becomes all the more unelectable; something that the Labour Party should have learned from Michael Foot's disastrous 1983 general election campaign. Back then Foot's manifesto was dubbed "the longest suicide note in history"(!)

Do you remember when Brazilian football coach Phil Scolari was to be hired as manager of the England national team but quit before he'd even signed the contract because he was already tired of the press stalking? Surely that sends a message to editors and producers that the way some (many?) do things is just plain wrong. I know that many segments of the public want every last juicy detail of someone's private life, but if that nonsense suddenly stopped, I bet a lot of people wouldn't even notice after a while.

Corruption? corruption in the FIFA, where everyone loves the beautiful match? :D

Maybe reforming the election process so that the votes are counted proportionally to the number of members would be a start ( but would make it more difficult for creatures like Blatter to get elected...)

Cayman Islands FA has 3000 members and their one vote is as strong as ours with 7 million members :D

If Putin gave me a back slap, I'd be thoroughly embarrassed and try to squirm away. Blatter will likely add it to his resume! As boorish and childish as it may sound, I have had the enormous pleasure of booing Sepp Blatter and Jack Warner in person at football matches they attended. As pathetic as that sounds, it's sadly the only thing football fans can do object to them such is the current structure of the game. Of course, if we all boycotted the game until things got sorted out, that would work but we all know that that's not going to happen. However, I watch far, far less football now that at any time in my life and it's largely to do with corruption, diving, cheating, whining etc.
