Was Peter Hunt gay?

I was reading on a Norman Wanstall over on MI6 (http://www.mi6.co.uk/sections/articles/interview_norman_wanstall3.php3?t=&s=) and it gave a great insight to making sounds for the early Bonds. Wanstall also hated working on Never Say Never again. Seriously worth a read. One part that really caught me off gaurd was this little bit...
Without doubt the most memorable moment in our relationship occurred when a guy came into our cutting room moaning and groaning about how difficult it was to succeed in the film industry. As he finally left the room his parting words were….. “It seems to me the only way to get on in this business is to be Jewish, homosexual or a Mason!” As the door closed Peter and I fell about laughing because I was none of those things whereas Peter was all three!

Is that true, I seriously had no idea that Hunt was gay (or jewish or a mason.)

Does anyone else know anymore about this?

A gay Jewish Freemason? Hunt must have been trying to corner the market on conspiracies!

But seriously, I just tried to find some information on Hunt, and it's difficult to dig up anything on him--and next to impossible to find something that doesn't associate him with Bond. There's a great deal about his work, but precious little on his life. I did read that he was survived only by an adopted son and a brother, so he apparently didn't marry. . .but what does that prove? Still, I did find a very nice interview he gave that has apparently been on the Net since Hunt was alive and kicking, as the author hopes Hunt will eventually direct another Bond film. It has a lot of interesting tidbits, including the information that Hunt was offered Never Say Never Again, but he didn't want to offend Cubby Broccoli! Here 'tis:

I always thought this aspect of Peter Hunt was matter-of-fact-ly common knowledge, which I think was mentioned in one of the DVD special feature interviews?

Hunt was one fine film editor!

His sharp eye and talent helped raise those first Bond films from B-grade to A class cinema.

Who cares! He was talented editor and a very nice man. I spoke with him at a Bond Convention in LA many years ago. (also got to meet George Lazenby at it).

No big deal to me...What is a big deal though is he put out arguably the finest Bond film to date - OHMSS.

His private life doesn't sway my opinion of his great cinematic credentials over the years.

I presumed he was from the interviews on the OHMSS DVD. I must say I actually found him rather creepy-i thought he resembled the toad in The Wind in the Willows. I know he was a great editor, director, but I thought he spoke very patronising of Lazenby and all told I thought "creepy"...

Don't know; don't care. I never met the man (although I did correspond with him). The only valid question for us is could he do his job? And the only answer is yes. Highly-praised editor on the first five films (YOLT under protest), director on the sixth, perhaps the most discussed Bond film of all. His subsequent non-Bond films (such as Gold and Shout At the Devil, both starring Roger Moore) were good, too.

Yes, Peter was gay. Couldn't really give a monkeys personally, he was a darn fine editor and a pretty good director too.

Without Peter Hunt, 007 would never have came thru the 60s because he has been mainly there for the action. And that's everything, which counts to me.

Additionally, what I can see from the footages, he has been a man with visions and a very grateful man.

So I guess we have two Bond directors that are gay. They would be Peter Hunt and Lee Tamahori, right? :))

It had a director all right, just a lazy and unimaginative one. But hey, I blame the producers for hiring him. :)

Lazenby said Peter Hunt was gay. I read it in an interview he gave.

As many others have pointed out, I can't see what difference it makes.
He was a great editor and talented director. The Bond films were lucky
    To have him. -{

No problem Paperbill -{ Please don't think it was an attack directed at you.
It was on the original question. for instance the late Patrick Macnee, although
Always perfectly dress on film and TV, was a Nudist, but I don't think
It had any bearing on his acting.

    Old joke time...... ;)
At a nudist colony for intellectuals, two old men are sitting in the conservatry.
One turns to the other and says, ‘I say, old boy, have you read Marx?’
The other says, ‘Yes, it’s these bloody wicker chairs ! :))

William Plomer, Ian Fleming's editor at Jonathan Cape was gay too. So was Alan Turing. Big deal - it's what they delivered in their work that matters to me more than their sexuality.

Yep, I'm in in - apart from the jewish and freemason's bit..

It is a source of horror that Lee Tamahori is gay as well - what did we do to deserve him?
