So…to put the Bond series in that context, I don’t think it jumped the shark until DAF. Even with YOLT, despite of how that movie was panned by critics, most commonly saying how bored Connery seemed, to me the movie as a whole was still sincerely delivered, in that they took what was happening as something seriously taking place.

    I totally agree about YOLT, and your analysis of the "jump the shark" concept is spot on as well. -{

The ones that stand out the most for me were Bond going into space in MR, and the invisible car in DAD.
    1 - LALD, 2 - AVTAK, 3 - LTK, 4 - OP, 5 - NTTD, 6 - FYEO, 7 - SF, 8 - DN, 9 - DAF, 10 - TSWLM, 11 - OHMSS, 12 - TMWTGG, 13 - GE, 14 - MR, 15 - TLD, 16 - YOLT, 17 - GF, 18 - DAD, 19 - TWINE, 20 - SP, 21 - TND, 22 - FRWL, 23 - TB, 24 - CR, 25 - QOS

    1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby

All I've ever read about DAF suggests that the team were deliberately trying to emulate GF (Sir Donald's diamond lecture parallelling that of Colonel Smithers, Shirley Bassey singing the theme song, Guy Hamilton directing, US locations, etc - at one point even considering bringing back Gert Fröbe as Goldfinger's twin brother), make the most of Connery's return, and "correct" OHMSS's percieved faults (too long, downbeat ending, no Connery, few gadgets). Lightening the tone went along with that approach.
It didn't seem to me that they felt invincible, indeed I get the impression that they felt they were playing it safe.

I can agree that they did play safe, especially because they had Connery with the rational of having a sure draw after the "Lazenby" experiment. I just watched LALD and forgot that the Guy Hamilton and Tom Mankiewicz tandem also did this, following-up DAF. Comparing the two films, LALD was relatively respectable and certainly has more creative integrity and sincerety.

I do think some of the silly stuff began in Bond with the " Q" air tank in TB. :#

Jaws falling in love, and the CGI surfing scene.

The DAF discussion above is interesting. I don't think they jumped the shark there...I think they smoked a lot of weed during production, and the audience probably were too, for it to gross higher than OHMSS :#

Bond goes Japanese. I like the film but that's honestly ridiculous. I don't think Bond going to space jumped the shark at all.

I think the "Jump the shark" concept is very useful way to judge when the humor in Bond has crossed the line into stupidity or self parody. Here are some "Jump the shark" moments off the top of my head:

-YOLT Japanese makeup-I know it's in the book but in the movie it's just dumb

    -OHMSS Kilt

-OHMSS Blofeld's plot with all the ladies-a little too crazy, and a far too transparent excuse to get Bond in the mountains with a bunch of beautiful women

-DAF Moon buggie chase-it's kinda fun, and it isn't too much of a stretch given the tone of the rest of the movie, but it in the end it's a Jump the shark moment.

-TMWTGG JW Pepper round 2-Pepper is great in LALD, but throwing him into TMWTGG was pretty half-baked

-MR the whole damn movie-except for the PTS. So good!

    -OP Tarzan yell- :#

-AVTAK-57 year old Moore sleeping with Grace Jones in her prime :))

    -LTK winking fish-WTF

-DAD again, whole film, except for the PTS

    I agree with you.

The kite surfing was just awful...

I liked the invisible car - thought that was very clever!
