TND is serious, but I feel like it's kind of maudlin. It doesn't earn the reputation it wants. And it's video-gamey.

    Jarvio.

Curious what makes TMWTGG last. Okay, I can see what makes it silly. But it also had a number of serious moments in there too and a would-be serious premise.

Also curious what makes TSWLM low and TB high. Both have a serious premise but with goofy villains and outlandish use of technology.

Perhaps my big failure with making this thread was not clarifying was silly vs. serious meant. Are we judging the plot, the acting, or the atmosphere?

I think there are a few things in both FYEO and OP that would have to put them in the very silly category, despite their seriousness in other parts :(

Don't really get Octopussy, but yeah for your eyes only had some out of place humour, a view to a kill and golden gun were the most mixed serious and silly. A view to a kill, has sillness of Moonraker and licence to kil. The man with the golden gun, has serious from russia with love, and silly Octopussy. All of the films have some seriousness to the, [ exept diamonds not one serious or logical thing in that film]

I'm surprised Skyfall isn't the highest of the Craig films. Although very serious I remember more Funny moments in CR and QOS then SF. Or is this silly as in plot?

Good point on Skyfall. That's why it's hard to rank them. A film like Octopussy is believable but has a ton of gags. Films like Skyfall are dour but lack believable stories.

AVTAK is definitely a weird case. It's totally over-the-top, unrealistic, parody territory and full of absurd gags. It's also kinda dark, violent, with themes of Nazi-ism and genetic engineering.

What are some of the absurd gags in AVTAK? I can think of the taxi driver. But most of the gags are either subtle things or funny quips like, "I love an early morning ride." "Well, I'm an early riser myself." But most of the gags are not absurd. DAF and MR have many absurd gags.

It was really a movie with Timothy Dalton in mind, and all of John Glen's films besides Octopussy were quite serious and dark in tone.

AVTAK on the other hand had May Day chucking someone out of Zorin's blimp half way through the movie, then came the part that was extremely dark for Bond's standards - throwing a KGB member into the propeller at Fisherman's Wharf then everything down in the San Andreas fault. Zorin gunning down everyone after his plan was completed.

I never heard of AVTAK being made with anyone in mind other than Roger Moore. If you don't think Octopussy is serious, watch it again. The scenes taking place in Germany have Roger Moore's most serious acting of the series. FYEO, OP and TLD weren't really dark at all, but they had realistic plots.
