That is an expression used to imply that for some reason watching the film felt like watching say Arnold Schwarzenegger's Commando (which was made in 80's if I m not wrong and probably was impressive then)

I revisited both GE and OHMSS on the same day. OHMSS despite being made in the 60's, continues to blow me away -{ (say like Arnold's T2 which still looks great)

Pros

Epic pre credits
Famke Jansen, one of the best Bond girls ever
Sean Bean
Great scenes, like when they fire up the Goldeneye "I'm timing you".
Car race with Jansen early in the film.

Cons

Boris, got on my nads
Music was very euro pop because of Serra.
"Get me a pint line" Bond does not drink pints.
Bond taking rollickings off a Woman M

While I love GE, what keeps me from ranking it higher is that, imo, it's Brozzer's least strong performance as Bond. I still think he's excellent in it, but for me it's really in his next 3 that he outdoes himself in the role (I give him an A average in GE and A plus grades in his other films).

It's still a 10/10 for me though, and I could watch it again and again.

When it comes to performances of actors as Bond, the deviation from the mean is negligible. So the performance of the actor, ideally, should not impact a film's ratings

It does for me, but we all do things differently (those of us who rank the films anyway).

I'd like DAF more if I liked Connery's performance in it more.

I know you tend to favor the older films, but we all rank differently. That's part of the beauty of Bond fandom, isn't it?

I saw it yesterday and give it 5/6.

Soundtrack is generic although the music during 007 vs Alec is pretty good....not on the level as John Barry but still.

After my latest viewing, here's a new list of Pros and Cons:

Pros:

-Solid direction from Campbell.
-Brosnan's debut performance is excellent.
-The dialogue is generally quite memorable. This is arguably one of the most quotable Bond films.
-Judy Dench's debut performance as M is quite impressive.
-Natalya is a likeable Bond Girl.
-Cumming is quite memorable as Boris.
-The score is entertaining.
-Famke Janssen is believable as Xenia.
-Great action.
-Robbie Coltrane rocks as Zukovsky.

Cons:

-Brosnan still isn't in top form, despite his excellent performance. He will hit top form in TND.
-Although Trevelyan is a good villain, he seems to be missing something.

Overall, I love GE, and give it a 9/10.

Am I alone in thinking that Bean gave a one-note performance as Treveyan (I feel that way after my last viewing)?

Bean is a talented actor, no question about that, but perhaps he could've been used a bit better.

I need to see more movies with him, any suggestions?

I know he was in LotR.

I think his performance was spot-on. On the one hand, he was a gentleman just like Bond (e.g. fine clothing, good appearance in general); and on the other hand he was an evil mastermind and insane.
he's certainly up there with C.Walken as my favourite villain!

P.S.: he's in "National Treasure" with N.Cage, but it's not such a good movie anyway

Unfortunately, the week I saw Goldeneye I saw his arse go up and down in Lady Chatterly's lover with Joely Richardson. Which spoilt Goldeneye for me.

He's a RADA graduate and has been in Ronin, Caravaggio, Sharpe (I don't know if that ocurred in America), Accused, Henry VIII and Odysseus in Troy

A very talented actor. I'd say his Boromir is one of the highlights of LoTr

Nope, I find him overrated. I don't like his character or his performance in GE.

I think I might prefer Graves to Trevelyan these days as far as the Brosnan BVs go.

I still put Elektra at the bottom of those 4 though. I just find Marceau's performance unconvincing. She's my main issue with TWINE.

New list of Pros and Cons:

Pros:

-Brosnan gives an excellent debut performance.
-The dialogue is very solid.
-Coltrane is great as Zukovsky.
-Great action scenes.
-Alan Cumming is entertaining as Boris.
-Great pacing.

Cons:

-Natalya is an okay Bond Girl, but I'm not as big a fan of hers as I used to be.
-Although I don't really hate Eric Serra's score, it can get tiresome.
-Xenia is a bit too OTT at times.
-Although Bean had the acting skills, his performance as Trevelyan feels somewhat one-note.

Overall, I like GE, and give it an 8/10.

Yes, GE fell outside my Top 10. I updated the ranking in my signature.

There's just something I don't like in Campbell's Bond films.

I used to love GE in particular, but it's grown off a bit.

Never was the biggest fan of CR, but it doesn't blow me away like it does for others.

Similar case .... Used to love GE earlier. But now the only silver lining for me is that it introduced Brosnan who did well in the film .... CR is still fine. But how Vesper is played appears weird to me for some reason. Overall, I still like CR esp. the part in Bahamas and Craig's performance
