Muse would be great. I'm with you on the base line - particularly the chris Cornell "You know my name".

Big Bowie fan, he'd have been great to do a Moore if they hadn't went in the rather silly direction they did.

Re: Songs that would have been great as Bond Themes

Agreed, Bowie would have been a great choice. I know he turned down the chance to ACT in a Bond film, though, so he may not have been keen to sing in one either.

Check out his album 'The Murky World of Barry Adamson' it's got an unusual take on the 007 theme.

Aside from the F-bomb in the lyrics, it would have been a good theme song.
Play it over a silenced Quantum of Solace title sequence.  Fits very nicely.

Dangerous Game - Barry Gray (Thunderbirds).  This is from the episode 'The Cham - Cham'.  I thought the lyrics are really appropriate for a Bond film and would be a great opening theme. ajb007/martini

Great song. I heard it was made for Skyfall but never used.

Anyone know if that's fact?

The World We Knew - Frank Sinatra
I had heard he was offered You Only Live Twice but he suggested Nancy get the nod.

Re: Songs that would have been great as Bond Themes

Cubby Broccoli had been friendly with the Sinatras for years, and this wouldn't be the only time Frank would be contacted re singing a Bond theme (MR being the other one).

Welcome to AJB, by the way! ajb007/smile  And as a Sinatra fan, "The World We Knew" is one of my favourites of his from the 60s: an intricate Kaempfert melody, very tricky for the vocalist- which is obviously no problem for Ol' Blue Eyes, but which might explain the lack of covers for this one ("Strangers In The Night" is similarly a difficult melody line to negotiate, but it was such a big hit that many had to attempt it).

Re: Songs that would have been great as Bond Themes

Check out Astrud Gilberto's "Who Needs Forever."  It was Quincy Jones's theme for the 1966 film "The Deadly Affair," directed by Sidney Lumet.

It might be better than "You Only Live Twice," matching that song's moody death-vibe perfectly.

Re: Songs that would have been great as Bond Themes

Thanks to CB0012, I just checked out Sinatra's "The World We Knew."  It's tremendous, and I'm surprised I've never heard of it before.

The song has a strong Bondian vibe that I would chalk up to its 1) extravagance, in orchestration and demanding vocal range; and 2) angst, because of its brooding lyrics, the speaker obsessed with what might have been.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZsQdLlvuk4  - The Cure: Fascination Street

With a slightly reduced intro* and different lyrics, this might have been good as the theme song for an angst-ridden, post-Barry, third Dalton Bond movie - its guitar-based, pop-goth riff 'updating' the moodiness of the guitar section of The James Bond Theme, its electro elements inviting neon-lit credits sequence erotica, and the whole song surging/rising to a self-indulgent late-80s climax.

*That intro would play well against a close shot of a shaken Dalton pulling on the controls of an aircraft as he flies away from a scene of destruction at the end of a PTS, finally relaxing into grim-faced satisfaction as the credits sequence kicks in...

I was looking on YouTube for M83's Solitude to link into this page and sure enough someone has already overlaid the song on Skyfall's titles:

Really good usage of strings in this track, has a David Arnold quality to it.

Check out this live vid from Brian Wilson who wrote it for the Bond producers, back in the 1960's.  Beach Boys are classic.
