"She's really quite stunning, once you get her on her back!" A really slimy, horrible thing to say and Almeric deliverß that line brilliantly. A really creepy and underrated villain.

Pretty much this. While there are some films I think could have done a lot more with, none of them are bad. With QOS, the backlash was so big, it was only a matter of time until people realized it was good.

True. And as Bond fans who want the franchise to stay at the top of its game, it is our duty to provide relevant feedback too .... However, too much negative feedback can confuse the producers and make them run in a different direction

Bond is Bond. If he want to see something like Bourne, we see Bourne films. Same for Hunt. There is not much point in trying to turn Bond a little Bournish because people have started watching and liking Bourne. We want Bond to be Bond, the character that has taken this genre to a new level and inspired many filmmakers :007)

    Well QoS is Craig's LtK.

I think both films are quite dark, although to me LtK is the darker one.

And both have their share of violence, although to me LtK is somewhat more morbid.

Have to comment on this. As I've posted elsewhere on other threads, Quantum for me is a great movie.
Its short and to the point.
    Has a great film score,
DC's anger and ruthlessnes is awesome,
    Olga Kurylenko
    Fight scenes
    Action scenes.
I've always liked the scene at tosca. And bonds casualness, it's moments like the scene at the Opera when bond comes face to face with green and his men I like the nonchalance bond displays with an air of aggression. Similar to when he lays out all his colleagues in the lift. Great moments. This film is unfairly criticised, but to me this film works. brutal bond at his unsmiling best.
I can't rank bond films. I love them all for different reasons!

I agree entirely. It seems like lots of fans are re-ranking the films every 2 weeks and I don't really get it.

I like that Quantum of Solace is different than the other films. I like my Bond films dark and gritty. I also love Octopussy and Live and Let Die too. That's what's great about the Bond series is that no matter what mood you're in, you have something to watch.

You made some good points. However, your post is like the movie's promotional trailer :)) .... Since you listed the pros, some of the cons include:

    * Action scenes were not edited well. The camera angles were unpleasant including close-ups
    * Many of the scenes were directly taken from other Bond films:
    a) Tie scene at the Opera in Austria - TSWLM
    b) Fields "painted" in oil - GF
    c) Bond's friend gets killed - LTK
    d) Bond goes rogue and escapes from M - LTK
    e) etc.
    * PTS + Theme Song + Haiti sequences were average (with close-up shots in action sequences including the boat chase). The film picks up once, Bond goes to Austria .... In Haiti, the fight and bike chase had shades of Bourne Ultimatum as well. To refresh your memory:

I enjoy QoS. It is a good film .... However, if I compare, I cannot rate it as highly as some of the other Bond films. The film could have been a lot better :)

Last year when I was saying QOS was my favourite Craig movie I got a lot of static for it... now I finally feel like folks are catching up to me (there was a time when I was the one playing catch-up with Dalton's films). :D

There are a very few Bond movies that get hurt on the whole by one factor.

In AVTAK it's Roger Moore's visible age.
In DAF, well...it's DAF :)) parody humour and an almost unrecognizably bored Connery.

    Besides those two there is:

Quantum Of Solace, almost destroyed by the shaky camera work and editing faster than the speed of light.

Overall I would say, QOS is criminally underrated. It has often even be considered a clunker in Craig's tenure.

But if you look past the editing mess (which is difficult admittedly) there is a supercalfiragilisticexpialidocious movie with a superb Camille, a fun Greene and action galore. Beautiful places filmed in crisp colours.
Skyfall looks like a sleeping pill compared to it.

QOS is No 13 in my ranking, but really only because of the crime that is the many destroyed action sequences.
The PTS even is a bloody impertinence and Marc Forster should be punished by having to watch it in IMAX 250 times in a row. :))

Daniel Craig never looked better than in QOS, the Tosca sequence is epic and belongs to the best ever things in the franchise.

Furthermore the way coolest kill ever happens in QOS when Craig tells Greene that he wondered how long he would last without drinking the oil in the can that Bond throws before Greene's feet. Then drives away, letting Greene stand there in the middle of the desert looking like a drowned rat.

I never minded the short running time, it fits the fast pacing of the movie.

After Casino Royale, the style of QOS was probably a mistake, it was one step too far away from the Bond we knew for over 40 years. The advantage of time is, with enough distance you can re-discover movies that you once considered to be not so good. QOS watched at its own after 7 years already feels so much better than in 2008.
I'm sure once it passes the 10 years mark, QOS will be generally considered better than it is now.

^ I agree whole heartedly, but I find myself becoming more and more okay with the editing style in the action pieces. It's something different that is lasting with the film.

Oh, SO similar. Both during writer's strikes, both written on the fly, both the most violent Bonds, both with Bond disobeying orders, both with strong Bond girls, both with villains done in by heat...
The dissimilarities are in a happy end to LTK, and a relatively serious end to QOS...

I don't know if I can think of any con for this movie... I genuinely love it and every time I watch it, it gets higher to the point it might be my favourite of the Bond films now.

If anything, maybe it could have slowed down in some places, but the pacing never felt too rushed to me.

I intentionally didn't do a cons list as we all seem to have the same ones, and they've been pretty well aired, it's what makes this film good to watch for people that is interesting me, It seems the tosca scene is a firm favourite. And I agree with some of the comments that in qos Craigs bond is superb, and one that could put a good fight against Jason Bourne.

Bond marathon - after a wee break!

    Pros:

    - Great PTS
    - Palio chase is epic
    - Fast moving pace between locations, Port au Prince chase is brilliant too
    - Great espionage/spy elements throughout
    - Awesome performance from Craig - tough as nails
    - Interesting geo-political elements and relevant plot point
    - Olga K is beautiful
    - Greene is a slimy villain
    - Brilliant soundtrack from David Arnold - IMO his best work
    - Tosca scenes are excellent
    - Short running time, non-stop action
    - DC3 chase is impressive
    - Fighting is brutal
    - Death of Mathis is sad
    - Ending in Russia is poignant, and well acted
    - Pacing of the shots, usage of close-ups and editing. It's an original style that works well.
    - Locations are colourful and real

    Cons:

    - Title song is horrible, the singing is strained. I kept turning it down and was excited for the song to end.
    - Non Danny K titles, they look nice, but are boring to look at
    - Some political elements to the film feel over-simplified and cynical.
    - Leiter is underused.
    - Fields is a certain type of character, but feels weekly written.

    Observations:

    - Arnold's Russia cue is similar to the DAD North Korea theme.

    Overall:

This is a hard as nails action, thriller spy-flick that hops the globe quickly, it flies through the plot and keeps you tuned into what's going on. I find I enjoy it greater than CR because it doesn't feel as absorbed in itself. To me it's an excellent action-focused Bond, with a good, intriguing plot line and it's very well made.

Before last night I had only seen QOS once and I hated it. I had such high hopes for QOS after the brilliance of CR and I felt so let down that I was actually depressed leaving the cinema. I swore I would never see it again. But since joining AJB I have been revisiting the series in order of release and in the interests of fairness I need to evaluate it again so I have purchased it on Play Movies - so here we go...

    Pros:
Bond, Camille, Mr White, Leiter, Mathis
    Titles
    The Opera
    Death Of Mathis
    The Ending

    Cons:
    Dominic Greene
    Title Song
    Car Chase
    Boat Chase
    Most of the fights
    Editing

    Conclusion:
The editing is still an unholy mess, completely destroying any excitement in the action sequences, if you can't see what is happening you can't feel involved. The plot is uninteresting and Greene is the worst villain ever. The title song is a hideous screeching affair with truly dreadful lyrics. Modern is not necessarily good. I was not keen on the fighting it was nowhere as near as good as in CR and some of it was ridiculous.

What I did enjoy was the continuation of the story from CR and that Quantum was a major player in the criminal world. I enjoyed most of the performances and DC put in another fine performance as Bond. The opera sequence was superbly handled and is the highlight of the film. Apart from what I have mentioned the rest of it is ok even if it doesn't stretch to being a "pro".

To be fair I enjoyed it a lot more this time round and will even give it another go in a few years and it has lifted off the bottom of my old ranking list.
Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

    Pros:

Cinematography - the colour palette looks as vibrant as the cinematography in the early Bond films. It's colourful, and feels more European.
Sense of culture - Even if we stop at each country for a short time, we get a taste of it. Opera in Austria, Palio Horse Race tradition in Siena, etc.
    Bond girls
Dominic Greene - is eerily slimy and a great addition to Bond's foes. Criminally underrated.
    General Medrano
    Arnold's score
    Mathis' return.
    Perla De Las Dunas
Writing of Bond character - more grounded and less thug. One of the best scenes is Bond regretfully killing Slate.

    Cons
    Mathis' death
    Some points of plot progression
Plot's a little weaker than usual.
How in god's name does Bond dispatch that last boat?!
Why doesn't Bond stand up for himself with M? He is framed to look rogue, but like he says at the end: he never left.

So today I watched QOS as my Bond marathon is nearing it's end.

I think most Bond fans cut this film some slack as it was made during the writers strike. I actually enjoyed the rewatching of this film. The one big bug bare was the way the film is edited together it makes you feel sea sick at times. However as the last three Bourne films are shot in the same way, I just pretended it was a Bourne movie and hey presto I found myself not noticing that side of the movie at all.

I think the story line is founded in reality, and although the villain isn't hiding spaceships in hollowed out volcano's, it is quite a decent twist that he is buying up all the water.

The CIA backing the Coupe is very real and most definately goes on. I love the return of Leiter, and now we learn he has been promoted I hope we see him again in Bond 25.

I enjoyed the fight with all the ropes and pulleys I think it is fantastic. The car chase sequence is good, and the audience is in the middle of it, I found it just to be a wee bit short.

Not much else I can say really this is probably DC's worst Bond movie but it's still a good Bond film. I enjoyed it immensley.

    Pro's

    - The opera scene
    - Bond's wardrobe
    - Olga

    Con's
    - Doesn't feel like a Bond film. Besides the opera scene and some of the wardrobe, this movie misses the class and sophistication I like in a Bond film and what differentiates it from other action franchises
    - Greene was a forgettable villain
    - plot was forgettable too. Something to do with water?

It's not that I hate this movie. The fight scenes look great, the chase in the PTS was nice too, but overall this has a strong ' Jason Bourne' feeling and very little James Bond. I like Bourne movies a lot, but when I want to watch a Bond movie, i want to see Bond elements. I missed that in this one.

    Other pros:
Felix Leiter ( who should be brought back and played by Jeff Wright)
    Bond/ slade fight.
    locations, locations, locations
Olga Kurylenko ( and bond not sleeping with her)
    Soundtrack.
Bond dealing with Vespers boyfriend scene.
    Return of the ppk
    Mathis and bonds interaction.
I could go on as I love this film.....

This is an excellent scene, but M outside babysitting Bond ruins it.

M being out and about as much as she was always has irked me slightly, that particular scene would lose nothing if one of the agents waiting outside hands bond a phone and the same conversation with m happens over the phone with m sat in her office, then bond hangs up, pops his collar, heads off into the snow and drops the love knot.
