I was 17 when FYEO came out. I don't think I've ever been as excited about a movie, before or since. Sometimes it seems like a you had to be there thing with this movie, waiting for a more FRWL style Bond movie after MR. This was probably the best movie experience I had with a Bond movie because it lived up to my expectations.
One of the better Bondfilms imo, just a really classic and good movie. There's just one little thing: Melina Havelock. Though she's not that bad, she is quite bland. Fortunately Bouquet is a beautiful lady to look at -{

They could have dispensed with a couple of unnecessary action sequences - the ice hockey fight and the mini sub battle. In fact the mini sub is dull and quite pointless ( Kristatos was waiting for Bond to bring the ATAC to him, so there was no real need to have the machine consigned to the foot of the ocean once more by sending Professor Pat Pending in to attack them).
I have always struggled to love this film without having a particularly good reason why. Some of it is terrific, often spoiled by the strange plinky plonky music.

Totally agree. Hockey fight is cringe worthy and the min-sub battle is a joke. As you pointed out, Kristatos was waiting for them anyway so why go to the trouble of duking it out in submarines? Even the enemy diver was unnecessary.
Considering the amount of trouble they encountered getting the ATAC, returning to the boat seems rather naive. Bond should have realized the mission was compromised and surfaced somewhere else.

Never minded the Hockey scene (although silly) and the mini sub scene (I see the point being unnecessary.) My only problem with this movie is that it refuses to be 100% 'straight.' The silly beginning and ending. Bibi Dahl. Also Kristatos is a very bland villain and it loses pace at the end. That is a shame, because 80-90% of the movie, is really really good.

I get what your saying but this seems to be a common occurrence in 80-90% of the Bond films anyway. There's always an element of 'lightness' and there are only a few Bonds which manage to keep this largely left out - FRWL, SF, CR.
That's true. But this was supposed to be a 'back to basic' movie. It is in most of the case, but the silliness is hard to ignore. I do realize I am being over picky with this film though, and I still like it a lot.

I know what you mean. It seems to me in many Bond films that it's very evident that certain things are hard to resist from the producers perspective. I love the Thatcher scene from a comedic point but I also think it's one of those scenes that dates and places the film distinctly within Thatcher's time and also the reality of it (that Thatcher is the PM).
I also find the dude with the wine between TSWLM-FYEO a tedious joke - at times the producers behind James Bond aren't actually that 'smart' in a sense they do repetitive, lowest common denominator jokes. But then again, this comes down to the argument I bring up often about the purist element that the films are broad entertainment set to make as many people as happy as possible...

It wouldn't be the amazing joke that it is if Victor Tourjansky didn't appear in three films. It's a joke so small that I think it works when repeated. It's not like if the same joke was in the dialogue three times.
