IMDB message boards have closed

The IMDB message boards ran for over 15 years. Deleted on Monday despite huge protest by the IMDB community. Farewell boards! I visited the boards for many years so it's sad to see them go. :(

It's possible some Bond fans from IMDB's James Bond board may register on this site.

That would be fine if they did :) . I looked in on their Bond board a couple of times, didn't know it was closing.

Not to get too misty-eyed, but IMDb's closing of its boards just reinforces how great AJB is. I am no great web maven -- don't have a Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat presence, never been on Reddit, barely have a LinkedIn profile -- but I have seen the same crappy, troll-dominated comments sections at IMDb and other sites that everyone has seen. Good riddance to all of them.

This place has always been, and remains, different. There are plenty of threads on this board that hold no interest for me, and it is not uncommon for some of what I read here to annoy the hell out of me. But with very few exceptions, everyone here is polite and respectful of others. Amazing how rare that has become on the web and in society in general.

    So, to all members, mods, Si, Dr. Beckmann and Professor Markowitz...my most profound thanks. -{

I agree, sir Hillary. And you also thaught me a new word - maven :D

I've learned a new one from you as well -- "thaught". :p

Actually, your ability to do all of this in English is amazing. The only three Norwegian "words" I know are Kjetil Andre Aamodt. :D

Thank you. I find that being active in this forum makes my English better and that's a nice bonus. I have found that I'm a lousy typist and for some reason I often type "words" like: fro, thsi, teh, soem .....
I know perfectly well how they are written and have doen so since I was a kid, but my fingers won't type what I'm thinking :#

You write in English better than half of people here who say they are in English-speaking countries.

No, seriously. That's really nice to hear. But I do edit my posts for mistakes quite a lot. To be honest I do react when I see how often the apostrophe is used wrong, English-speakers included.

I do indeed see a lot of that on the internet. People don't know that it should almost never be used for plural, not even when talking about DVDs. Apostrophes can be used for plural in single letters and numbers: o's and 7's. Concerning uppercase letters, I believe some accept Os and O's to both be correct. But when people use it's and its improperly, I get really confused.

I was on there as Bondfan90. My avatar was a pic of George, during his introduction on the beach in OHMSS. I had been posting since 2014. I'll miss it i'm on a site called imdb2.freeforums.net, using the same name.

We've already got some IMDb refugees join up over at MI6 Community. One of them even created a thread for them to identify themselves:

I think the success of this site is a shared common adult interest, grown up conversation and friendly banter and the ability to self police. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience in Bond and life on this site which gives it a homely feel. Sure you get the odd mis guided prat or two but most of us are here to enjoy our Bond connection, share stories and thoughts in an environment with like minded people. The ferver of a new film (pre and post), the identification of an item through genuinely great detective work that even Bond would be proud of (dedication through which never ceases to amaze me), make this place a real pleasure to visit.

Well done all we make it what it is - a pleasant place to be to take Solice from everyday life and share a passion (even if it is an expensive one at times!). Having been recently briefed on the DarkNet there are worse places to hang out :))

I have visited and been party to many sites but over the years have come down to just two both of which support my personal passion Bond and Watches. And both sites have a similar feel and vibe that works for me. Finally one day I will join the Aston Martin owners forum just need to save my sheckles first to buy one!

    Long may that continue

    Cheers :007)

If anyone enjoyed using the IMDB to discuss individual fillms, tv shows, actors, The Movie DB is an alternative.

    https://www.themoviedb.org/

It doesn't have many users but should grow in size.

It's a shame, I had been a member for 9 years and had quite a few great conversations about various movies/shows over the years. Yes there were a lot of idiots there, but that's because there are a lot of idiots in the world. I've read a lot of comments and stories around the web that seem to be celebrating the end of a den of hate/sexism/racism/trolling. IMDb no longer having a message board doesn't change the fact those morons exist, and they still have computers. They'll just post it elsewhere, like the YouTube comments section, which is a million times worse than IMDb ever was. Especially if you strayed away from the new releases (which is where the trolls mostly congregated as the increased traffic meant more attention) and just hung out on boards or classic/cult movies or the old Bond movies. There you'd find plenty of great conversation going on.

Things got very fractious very quickly on an imdb messageboard but where can I now enquire as to why it is I have never in my entire life seen an Honor Blackman episode of The Avengers, while the later ones get shown on True Entertainment regularly?

I think it has something to do with the first three series shot on video tape rather than film.

Yes, I think it was called monochrome.

Monochrome means black-and-white. The first Peel series was also monochrome, but shot on film rather than tape. Film holds up much better. It also allowed the production values to be higher than tape did.

Yes, I thought as much. Thanks for filling in the details there.

I suppose that the Cathy Gale episodes of The Avengers are available on DVD though?

I have a few of the colour Emma Peel series on DVD boxsets I've picked up here and there.

I only realized this the other day when I was trying to find an old thread I contributed to about Alden Ehrenreich. Kinda bummed out since that was my go to place when I needed clarification of the random plot hole...that's not Bond related! I kind of understand if much of the rationale for its closure are the trolls, of which that board had in abundance.

I've read a lot of comments and stories around the web that seem to be celebrating the end of a den of hate/sexism/racism/trolling.

The problem is that IMDb pretended to have a system of moderation, but in reality it didn't. When the Baz Luhrmann version of The Great Gatsby came out, there was one poster who started about five separate threads on that movie's message board asking if there was any "making of" footage of the car accident in which Myrtle Wilson is killed. I searched for other content by this person and 95% of his posts were related to the death scenes of female characters. I reported the poster to IMDB with numerous links to the threads this obviously disturbed individual had started. Never heard anything back and they didn't take down any of the posts.

    I miss it to.

I used to use it for the exact same reason as you and also to find spoilers.

The trolls nearly killed a couple of threads I was using so I can why they have taken the decision they have.

I saw one of the reasons they closed it was because 'we have an enthusiastic but small number of members who use the forums' ...this surprised me but maybe looking at how many members they have compared to forum users is insignificant and requires hard work of moderating.

I'm glad you folks are discussing this, because last couple times I went to imdb to read discussion about a movie I'd just watched, I'd been wondering why I couldn't find those threads ... they were often more interesting than the formal reviews
I suppose that the Cathy Gale episodes of The Avengers are available on DVD though?.
at least a few of them definitely are, my old library had two or three Honour Blackman era dvd's, with three episodes apiece
they're played a little straighter than the Diana Rigg episodes, less stylised and without so much of the ironic comic rapport MacNee and Rigg had
Blackman does have the martial arts moves though, theres always at least one hand to hand combat sequence featuring her per episode, you can see why they had to write in a scene for her to throw Connery around in Goldfinger

never seen those dvd's in stores though, there is currently a relatively cheap 16dvd boxset with every Diana Rigg episode, which I think all you bond fans need in your collection, and I now need those Blackman era episodes to sit along side it

do we have an Avengers thread? the more I work my way through the Rigg-era boxset, the more I want to read other folks opinions on this zany stuff

Well they did moderate but I don't know how good of a job they did. People got banned all the time and there were lots of messages/threads that were deleted by moderators. People would just register with another account/e-mail though. I wouldn't want to see a message board closed because the moderators weren't that great though. I don't need a moderator. I just ignored the trolls/morons by not paying attention to their stupid posts or by actually choosing the Ignore option so their messages didn't even appear.
