That's fine and commendable but as you see from the comments above, the overriding concern here is that it is screen accurate, just because it works and looks good isn't enough for most members here, loss of screen accuracy loses customers.
Also the 'wooden' dagger was only used for after filming publicity and is not the knife you see on screen.
I stand corrected, I thought someone said that the knife in the scene with Q was a wooden prop knife, I must have read it wrong. Well Gadget Meister, Im confused to which screen accuracy you are referring, because by the screen shots I posted there is clearly no drilling on the guard that is evident. If anyone here can provide a clearer picture which shows otherwise we'd be more than glad to adjust to that.
I sit on the fence, I've checked the blu ray and you only ever get to see one side of the knife clearly in each scene (M's Office & The Train Fight) The only person who can settle this is Dave Worall who has not only handled this but was gifted one of the original screen used ones. If you you want to get this spot on then touch base with Dave.

Guys, I agree.....Dave should be the 'Last Word' on this. He is the only one I know that has handled the original.
I don't claim to be an expert as I've never handled the real thing. Desmond's attaché' case only had the replacement travel dull 'knives' in his case (which, by the way, you can CLEARLY see that it has a hole which is what allowed it to lock into the case)
I agree that it may be a blind hole that does not go all the way through and explains why we don't see it in the screen grabs.
Either way, I look forward to seeing the finished product. I hope that Dave replies and settles the question "To hole or not to hole..THAT is the question" --Ed
By the way, in case anyone's wondering why the attache' has all that wear on the top of the leather.....
Desmond told me that early on, the lock stopped working (in the short feature with Moneypenny & Q in the lab you can actually see the lock fall off the case while Moneypenny's eyes follow it fall to the floor) Anyway, with the lock not working Desmond had to somehow secure it closed as he was carrying a lot of other props in the case so....he used strips of duct tape to secure it. If he passed through customs and when he arrived at exhibitions...it needed to be stripped off...time and again...ruining the leather!!
Regarding the Moneypenny & Q special....Look closely the next time you watch it and you'll see one of the technicians get hit in the face by debris flying off the target he shoots. It looks painful!!! --Ed
Ok, first I'd like to thank all of you for your help and input. I contacted Mr. Worall to settle this discussion as suggested. He was very helpful and we had a nice chat. He told me he now owns the original movie prop, which I thought was very cool. So the answer about the hole drilled in the fingerguard on the knife is a resounding...
No.
There are no holes drilled in the knife to aid in the slide mechanism. We thought that the myth of this may have come from one of the toy attache cases produced in the 60's that may have had a knife held in the case with a pin through the pommel of the knife. But the actual knife used in the movie did not. Funny as that might seem, some of the repros may have been a repro of a toy knife produced 50 years ago and not the actual prop. Again thanks for the help and Im glad this is solved-
Glad to hear that's settled and a common misconception has been debunked. I believe this came about from SD using the wooden prop as a basis for their aluminium replica. All of the knives shown in this thread are either SD or based on the SD drawings.
So onward and upward, what material are you looking at, and are you intending to plate or polish the knife?
