Topic: Old Bond games?

I'm after a bit of help. I'm in no way an expert on games and I'm really not a frequent player. However I have somehow come to the conclusion that it would be a good idea to buy a ZX Spectrum and the Bond games for it. Surprisingly, Spectrums appear to be in demand on eBay or else quite highly priced. I have watching a few.

I've never had such an old console before so am looking forward to see what the early life of consoles was like. I had a Sega Megadrive and got it out again a few years ago. From what I remember it was quite temperamental, yet I still loved it. I'm hoping the Spectrum holds out better.

I've gone for a Spectrum as after looking at the 80s Bond games, it seems to be the only console that nearly all the games were released on and there seem to be more of the Bond games for it on eBay, than for Commodore 64.

Basically what can I expect? I know it will be slower than I'm used to with a picture that can hardly be called 'graphics'. What I mean is, how easy is it going to be to use? Will it work on my LCD tv or only the CRT one?
What did/do people think of those early games - TSWLM, AVTAK, LALD, TLD, LTK etc. I've been looking a lot at the 007 Action Pack which came with a light gun and a game (possibly 2, I'm not sure) so was also wondering if anyone had it?
Finally, anything else anyone wants to tell me about the pre-Goldeneye N64 era of Bond gaming.

Re: Old Bond games?

The best old school Bond game pre GE64 is James Bond The Duel for the sega genesis. It  includes the return of 4 classic Bond villians (JAWS,Baron Samedi,Oddjob,Mayday) in an original storyline made for the game.  If you can find where to download it with an emulator its definitley worth a try.

It was actually looking into it which led me to the Spectrum games! I'm definitely going to get it as I've still got my Sega  ajb007/smile

Re: Old Bond games?

Mmmm...I have the Bond ZX Spectrum edition....nice packaging...and that's where it should stay !

Spectrum games take AGES to load up...and quite often it will take several attempts to do so...and the games (well, the Bond ones anyway) aren't really much good...I'm pretty sure I've played all the ones you mention - maybe not all of them on the Spectrum though - the graphics are VERY basic and some of the games turn into text-based games for some of the levels too...

I'd stick with the Mega Drive - the ZX Spectrum is not as reliable, not even close...and, as said, the games takes ages to load and quite often will crash...

Good luck  ajb007/martini

Re: Old Bond games?

Interesting thread. I've long been interested in the vintage James Bond computer games since reading and keeping a computer magazine article from the year 2000. Having said all that, I've never heard of the James Bond The Duel Sega Mega Drive before - that's a new one to me. A very good article could be written on this area of Bondology, but my knowledge of it is much too minimal to be the one to write it. That I leave to others.

I don't keep my promises.

One of the old Spectrum games had a separate audio castette tape with a briefing from Q himself Desmond Llewelyn.

Awesome. I've been searching for the audio on YouTube just now.
When I used to play James Bond when I was 7 or 8 running around the house in a little tuxedo
I used to listen to the tape and think I was getting a briefing from Q.
20 something years later and nothing changes!  ajb007/lol

As the saying has it: "The more things change, the more they stay the same." How true.  ajb007/smile

Re: Old Bond games?

The Duel was also offered for the Sega Game Gear in the United Kingdom as well as Mega Drive and Genesis.

I believe that the Game Gear versions plays pretty well given the limits of handheld games at the time it came out.
