2 Future Films-UNCLE and Le Carre

BleuvilleBleuville Posts: 384MI6 Agent
Read that the most recent John Le Carre book - Our Kind of Traitor - is to be filmed for next year with Ralph Fiennes (new M) and Ewan McGregor. It's an enjoyable story about a young couple who are asked by a Russian Mafia type to help him contact British Intelligence to pass on information. but everyone else has their own agendas.

The other film is The Man From UNCLE with Tom Cruise as Napoleon Solo.
Will be interesting to see how it's updated. Not an Mission Impossible Clone I hope.

Some outline info is on IMDB.

    If the Le Carre Film is as good as "Tinker,Tailor,soldier, spy" then it should be great. -{
As for the Man from UNCLE. I'd say it should be fun. Might be a bit camp and have a
few laughs. ( contemporary Sherlock Holmes ) I'll probably go to see them Both. :D

Cruise has the ability to take on roles he isn't suitable for and change my opinion. He's done this constantly (Lestat being the best example). The only thing he couldn't do was Jack Reacher as he is just physically the opposite end of the scale. I hope TMFU isn't a comedy romp, but adds something new to the genre. It better have damned cool guns too.

Swedish actress Alicia Vikander is set to take the lead female role in the new Man From U.N.C.L.E. film. Vikander will play a British agent who has a thing for cars. The character did not appear in the TV series nor the short-lived spinoff, The Girl From U.N.C.L.E., and is a new creation.

Thing about Cruise is that he just has no range, or depth for that matter. We know what we're going to get, and he seems to be in that faded Arnie phase where he still knocks out the movies but no one cares quite as much any more. That said, he is a kind of bona fide movie star, you can't say Brad Pitt ever stepped up to the plate, and Clooney never seemed to really want to either.

I had all the Man from UNCLE toys, I loved that show, I hope this movie doesn't disappoint me...
There's an American TV show called NCIS and one of the stars is David McCallum, Illya Kuryakin of Man from UNCLE fame. In one of the episodes the younger agents were talking about him, he plays a forensics scientist, and one of the ladies said, "I bet when he was younger he looked like Illya Kuryakin.."

Not one person watching the idiot box with me that night got the joke...

Tom Cruise has exited the lead role in Man From U.N.C.L.E. to concentrate on producing and starring in Mission: Impossible 5. Warner Bros. has a script they like, and a top director who's expecting to direct U.N.C.L.E. in the fall (autumn). The timing proved too difficult for Cruise so he stepped out.

Oh good. Glad he stepped out I can't STAND Tom Cruise...would have prevented me from seeing U.N.C.L.E.

As for Le Carre...I didn't much care for Tinker Tailor as a BOOK...the movie was a different case. Very good.

Maybe it's because I was forced to read it in college quite against my will. The teacher had told us to pick one thing (anything WE wanted, to make it more fun for us to lear to write more critically)!from the 60s and do a project on it, as it was a writing class. Unsurprisingly to anyone, I chose Bond. And was all set and ready to go with my project, and then the old witch said that I HAD to change my project to compare Tinker Tailor and Casino Royale. And to prove Tinker was better. I tried to fight back, telling her that she was trying to force me, and only me to do a project she picked, instead of one that I had chosen, defeatng the purpose...she stuck to her guns, threatening to fail me (and as a freshman at the time, I was too nervous to speak to the dean about it) if I didn't do the project she wanted. I agreed, but sneakily went about proving that Casino Royale was better (it's one my my favorite books anyway), and even slipped in a bit about how rude it is to try to backhand people like she tried with me. She wanted to fail me, but couldn't seeing as I can write...and my project went on to be the most popular with the class.

Moral of my dumb rant is. I shall see the next Carre movie. Just don't expect me to read the book :P

Originally it was to be a Soderberg film with Clooney as Solo. Clooney ended up exiting bcause of health issues. He would have been right for the role, if a bit too old.
This project will get made eventually. Loved the series. Wish the best for the film.

I'm really glad Tom Cruise isn't involved on TMFU any more, he's far, far too old for Napoleon Solo.

Now, if we can just convince the powers that be to cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the role, we're onto a winner.

Don't shoot first, but since Solo is a well bred, Ivy League, tongue in cheek sorta guy, what about Bradley Cooper? He could have fun with it and make it more contemporary.
Soderberg's version was set in the 60's.

thought it will put an end to any Bond hopes.

USA Today interview with Henry Cavill. At the end says Cavill just signed on to star as a spy in Guy Ritchie's adaptation of the Man From U.N.C.L.E. Cavill is quoted: "Things are full-steam ahead. It's all very early days. But it's gonna happen. Well, this is Hollywood. It's supposed to happen."

Article, plus pics from the set of the new Man From U.N.C.L.E film starring Henry Cavill (Napoleon Solo), Armie Hammer (Ilya Kuryakin), and Alicia Vikander (Gaby Teller). The film, set at the height of the Cold War, centres on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin who are forced to put aside their long standing hostilities and take on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization from destabilising the fragile balance of power.
