Purchasing a suit - long distance woes

I have still yet to purchase a nice suit though have the funds saved after selling a few things of late.
Here is my situation:
I live VERY remotely overseas and my entire shopping is done online or on vacation once a year. I use London as a stop-over for my business trips on route to the Far East once a year etc however I prob only spend 3 days max in the city. This has kind of ruled me out of getting anything bespoke or made to measure.
What are my options here with regards to getting a decent suit for example e.g Tom Ford
Off the rack with later minor alterations? I have various clothes in the brand that I purchased (trousers etc) and the odd purchase from the Milan store therefore have a good idea of size
Made to measure - send measurements??
Im guessing some of you guys have actually bought suits online and even had them altered e.g. Mantis Skyfall Tuxedo
Any advice appreciated, as you can gather I cannot simply walk into a store etc. On the plus side I don't pay VAT which I guess would help the cover cost of alterations.
