Most Beautiful-Looking Bond Film?

chrisisallchrisisall Western Mass, USAPosts: 9,061MI6 Agent
Personally, I really dislike the digital look of the 21st Century Bonds, so although Skyfall was brilliantly photographed, the digital corrections & enhancements take it out of the running IMO.
DAF had some insanely pretty moments, but a lot of crude ones as well.
OP was actually very nice to look at...
I suppose it's between YOLT & TLD for me.
I'd have to give it to Freddie Young & Co. Just a super-lush visual experience.

Your pick?
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

Moonraker looks incredible for it's time, much to do with the money they put into it. The stuff in Rio just makes me yearn for a vacation.

YOLT holds up very well. Thunderball's underwater sequences are up there. I don't think I could put a Brosnan film up there. CR has some truly beautiful moments.

TSWLM and MR is a stunning beauty of a double feature -{ The scenes in Egypt are phenomenal.

I like the look of LALD and TMWTGG, but that 3 year span between GG and Spy clearly makes a difference as the feel of the films after are just different. Wonder what camera technology advancements caused the upgrade

Yeah, that stuff is pretty great. Some of the rear projection is a bit dodgy though, as was most back then.
TND is pretty nice visually in many places. Lots of nice camera movement & such...

Yeah the fight aboard the Disco Volante is rough around the edges.

Good point about TND. The Bond and Wai Lin bike chase has some good stuff, and I like the big media sets around Carver. Reminiscent of the shuttle area set of Ken Adam from MR.

    Casino Royale and Skyfall!

In CR, I remember being breathless when after the poker game, when Vesper wakes Bond up, the surrounding views was amazing. For Skyfall on the boat ride to the abandoned island, that was incredible as well.

You Only Live Twice is indeed beautiful, however the sound in the movie is not so good IMHO. Some terrible dubbing and sound effects, the score is great though.

    I can't argue here.

Here are the Bond cinematographers & other notable films they did (this took a while):

Dr no, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, Diamonds Are Forever, Live & Let Die, Man With The Golden Gun- Ted Moore, also did Clash Of The Titans.

You Only Live Twice- Freddie Young, also did Lawrence Of Arabia & Doctor Zhivago.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service- Michael Reed, who also did Dracula: Prince of Darkness, and The Saint TV series.

The Spy Who Loved Me- Claude Renoir, also did Barbarella.

Moonraker- Jean Tournier, also did Day Of The Jackal.

For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, View To A Kill- Alan Hume, also did Legend Of Hell House, Return Of The Jedi & Supergirl.

The Living Daylights, License To Kill - Alec Mills, also did Christopher Columbus: The Discovery.

Goldeneye, Casino Royale- Phil Meheux, also did Highlander II, The Saint & the two Zorro movies.

Tomorrow Never Dies- Roger Elswit, also did Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

The World Is Not Enough- Adrian Biddle, also did Aliens, Princess Bride, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, V For Vendetta.

Die Another Day- David Tattersall, also did Star Wars eps I & II, The Matador, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, Speed Racer.

Quantum Of Solace- Roberto Schaefer, also did Monster's Ball.

Skyfall- Roger Deakins, also did O Brother, Where Art Thou?

I would say it's very close between MR, YOLT, and TMWTGG in terms of cinematography. QoS (hurt by the location titles just as much as the speedy camera--even without "shaky cam", ANY film that's fast-paced is probably going to suffer a bit from that) and LTK (despite really liking LTK, I thought the cinematography was pretty bland and sub-par) are near the bottom.
By the way, are you gonna eat that?

For me, in plain terms of photography/cinematography, it would be LTK, with the blues of the sea, the purples of dusk (the magic hour as they call it) and even the explosions.

Y'know, I just watched my brand new Blu Ray of that and I have to say, it was pretty striking. The underwater stuff reminded me heavily of Thunderball.

It was actually a lot of fun (& very informative) to compile. IMDB is my friend.
My big surprise was Adrian Biddle for TWINE (he ALSO did Willow, Thelma & Louise and Stallone's Judge Dredd); now I know why it had that inky, moody look to it.

    Any of the Connery Bonds.

Most of us have never seen them projected with a fresh print onto the big screen. My mother saw them when they first came out and said they were breathtaking. Any time they're on TV, she just scoffs at how the film looks unimpressive.

While the screen resolution looks arguably higher in more contemporary films, I prefer the lush color and wonderful saturation of the 60s Bond films instead.

I was fortunate enough to see them all on the big screen in theatre revivals as a teen here in the U.S.
Most theatres now simply show a Blu Ray digitally projected on big pearly screen, not at all the actual film-projected experience of old.
