Bond actors: best to worst shape.

Virgil37Virgil37 Posts: 1,212MI6 Agent
Connery was in amazing shape in DN and FRWL. Best shape for a Bond actor ever. Muscular but not bulky as Craig in CR.

Honorary mention to Mr. Lazenby, almost as good shape as Connery in DN.

Worst shape, it has to be either Connery in DAF or Moore in OP. Moore's bod was always slightly flubby anyways, so I guess Moore.

Dalton and Brosnan always looked feeble. Maybe a tad too thin. Especially Brosnan in GE is way too thin.

Since im quite into fitness this is gonna be pretty longwinded :)) but Daniel Craig was in the best shape out of any of the Bonds in QOS/SF. In CR he had the most mass of course, but his face looks really bloated for a lot of the film, his jaw and cheeks are really round in a few shots. In QOS and SF since he was leaner and had more functional agility and work outs, I would say hes in better overall shape then CR. Also he fit his suits better and facially his features were way sharper. you couldve cut sheet metal off of how chiseled his jawline was in SF. But most importantly he looks like someone who could do all the things Bond does.

    bloated looking in CR.

as for the other Bonds, Sean Connery was definitely the second best in shape, at least in his first few films, having been a bodybuilder in the past and just generally having a big build made him believable at being athletic and deadly. from YOLT onwards he continually got fatter and less believable though.

Lazenby is third because he looks really athletic and in shape in OHMSS again lending believability that hes capable of pulling off the things Bond does physically.

Dalton and Brosnan I consider in equal shape. They both just have a runners bodys with very little muscle tone which Bond was written as having I think. But on screen Brosnan and Dalton just look like sticks with really unimposing physiques for someone who is as athletic and lethal as Bond. Pierce is especially thin in GE, but in TNDs he was in the best shape out of his 4 films having gained some mass.

Roger Moore is absolutely in the worst shape out of all the Bonds, he looks like he never worked out a day in his life. that's why I just cant take him seriously at all as Bond, he looks like a wimp on screen.

Ummm, no, Bond was written as lean and reasonably muscular (OHMSS was fairly telling on this; he was in good shape, but needed to be in a bit more for the coming rigerous escape). A runner or swimmer's bod would work with that.
Early Connery, Lazenby, Dalton and Brosnan (after GE) all fit the bill very well. Moore was always a bit big, and Craig was a bit bulky in CR, but toned it down to a good level in QoS & SF.
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

I have thought it through, and I change my vote to worst shape , Connery in DAF. Tragic if we consider how he was 9 years earlier.

Moore was told to lose weight for LALD and he looks pretty slim there. Not so in OP though.

I don't think Dalton fits the "lean and reasonably muscular" premise. He was just thin. No muscle mass at all in LTK.

Brosnan might fit the description in GE, although he was way too thin.

I agree Craig looked better in QoS and SF . It also makes sense that he was so muscular in CR, he had just completed his training then right?

Early Connery and Lazenby were definitely the best IMO. They look just like me! ;)

I agree -{ Dalton and Brosnan were good Bonds but they would fall into the "do you even lift" category with Roger Moore :))

People that think these guys were thin are usually either serious gym rats or fat peeps. Which are you, Virgil? ;)

See, Bond has no time to live at a gym. In the books his workout was whatever he did on the carpet of wherever he was. Dalton looked fine & fit from that POV.

And the whole thing with Craig in CR is just silly. He's near 40 and just got out of training? Please. :))

Neither a "gym rat" or a "fat peep", I just use my eyes and memory. I remember everyone back in the day saying Brosnan was too thin in GE. Dalton didn't look particulary muscular in LTK with his shirt off. Fit, yeah. Fine, yeah. Still, miles away from early Connery, Lazenby or Craig.

I guess a real life agent would have to make time for training when he's not in the field. Otherwise he wouldn't pass his physical test, as happenned to Craig in SF, right?

You may be right in today's micromanaged corporate-style world, but Bond was created in an era when if you could get the job done, THAT WAS the test.
And please, don't bring up 'the real world' when discussing Bond- in the real world only soldiers & special ops see action, and it's mostly firefights. Undercover agents don't need to look like killers, and in fact shouldn't. Bond is adult pulp fantasy, and as such, over-analyzing like this on such a subject is the definition of silly.

Yes, WE are being silly. :))

Although I love the novels, the Bond of the movies always lives in the era the movies are made. So the Craig-Bond was born in 1968 and he lives in 2014, very likely the character would work out.

I'm not making up the training thing, I read somewhere that he bulked up for CR to portray a recent special forces background. Maybe I read it in Ajb007!

I wouldn't talk about "the real world" if it was a Brosnan movie, that's for sure ;) .
