As a matter of interest, I've only ever seen the original version, and thought it
Was just OK. Irs the restored director's cut much better, I.e. is it worth watching ?

There's a Director's Cut and a Final Cut. I'd personally say watch the US or International theatrical cuts first, then the Final Cut with it's very cleaned up image (Final Cut is the real director's cut, as the originally named Director's Cut was a forced release by the studio). I think Final Cut can ruin the original theatrical cuts (it makes significant change to the philosophy and theme of the film through certain edits) but not vice versa, so theatrical cuts should be done first.

Final Cut certainly isn't a drop in quality, but it changes the film in a way that is significant enough to say it isn't the film that became famous. Harrison Ford along with the screenwriter disagree with the significant change in the Final Cut that Ridley Scott made. It just changes the theme, and the theme, in my opinion, is preserved in significance if you watch theatrical and then Final Cut.
