My Take on the Connery films

chrisisallchrisisall Western Mass, USAPosts: 9,061MI6 Agent
DN- an attempt to bring the Fleming Bond to cinematic life. Very successful.
FRWL- a continuance of same.
GF- Hey, get that director who did The Winston Affair- he's cool!
TB- Hamilton is out, get Young back... (but Young wasn't up for turning Bond into an epic affair)... editors! Speed things up! Literally!
YOLT- get that Alfie guy! It'll class up our franchise!
DAF- lure Hamilton back, he did GF! So what if he's getting silly in his old age...
:))
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

Dr No is a great opener to the series and has the best bond girl; FRWL is a fine story and performance by Connery and has the classic train fight; GF is overrated, although enjoyable; Thunderball should be renamed to Thunderbore; YOLT is great fun and an underrated entry; DAF what I said for YOLT.

And NSNA... Doesn't even exist in my world. A poor, unnecessary remake.

    Let me expand...
    (but not like Kananga)

DN- it really had everything but a budget. Still, remarkable what they were able to do, Connery's great, Weisman's great, the screenplay is near flawless, the action is very dapper...
    4.5 of 5
FRWL- A slightly bigger budget let Bond's world open up a bit. Connery in top form, and an awesome Robert Shaw.
    4.5 of 5
GF- the true beginning of the phenominon, a screenplay that improves upon the novel (!), and slick flawless direction make this iconic in most every way.
    5 of 5
TB- Terence Young either a bit out of his league, or possibly a little uninterested in turning his creation into a giant blockbuster... uneven yet grand, slow paced yet heavily augmented with jagged editing and sped up photography, it's really hed together by Connery's performance.
    4 of 5
YOLT- even Connery phoning it in in some scenes is still CONNERY. Wild story, OTT settings, huge budget = much fun to be had.
    4.5 of 5
DAF- hands down the funniest written & improvised dialogue of the franchise. A precursor to the Moore years for sure, but still fun on an entirely different level from the Sixties entries.
    3.5 of 5
NSNA- Connery looking oddly more fit 12 years after his previous appearance as Bond, the film is a strange mix of serious & silly, with a few great set-pieces.
    3 of 5
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

Love it..just love it. It would almost make a great standup routine. If you get the chance, do please the rest of the series...

LALD - Let's get Moore, we're going to just get sillier anyway.

OHMSS- The cheeky bloke just busted our stunt guy in the chops; that's our new Bond!!
TMWTGG- Everybody was kung fu fighting...
TSWLM- Let's re-work YOLT for Rog.
MR- Let's re-work YOLT fo Rog. With starships. Okay, space shuttles.
FYEO- Yeah, we went too far.
OP- Put a chase here. Squeeze in another sound gag. Do an Indy-kinda thing over there. Can there be another explosion? Remember, we're fighting Sean now...
AVTAK- Get the stunt double. And earplugs; Tanya's loud.
    TLD- Oh crap, Tim's serious.
LTK- This better not get an 18.
GE- We got Remington Steele & Auntie Entity!
TND- Relax, and have some fun.
TWINE- Another SERIOUS Bond? MMmm, well, then get Denise Richards.
DAD- We have faith in you, Mr. Tamahorri.
CR- Tamahorri screwed us, get the GE guy, and be Bourne brutal!
QOS- Uh, okay, uh, Mark & Dan, YOU write it.
SF- See. I told you an art-house director would work.

So to conclude, my favourites are YOLT & DN.
The "best" are GF, FRWL & DN.

Now, my biggest problems with each Connery movie.

DN- The climactic explosion needed a bigger model with multiple angles.
FRWL- Bond should have thrashed Klebb easily.
GF- It's a little talky in the middle.
TB- The silent movie end with the whiplash extraction. The book ending would have been far superiour.
YOLT- Blofeld should have been a physically more imposing dude. They should have gotten Telly.
DAF- Sweet transvestite. They should have gotten Telly.
NSNA- The snail-paced final reel & the wink (what is Bond? A poolside fish sculpture?)
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

DN- probably the small budget prevented what you suggest.
FRWL- of course, in real life. But Big Tam wouldn't have got away with decking Little Lotte with a right hook.
GF- it's only noticeable after 351 viewings.
    TB- yup!
    YOLT- last minute replacement casting
DAF- one scene! Telly couldn't have pulled it off either
NSNA- that's not its biggest flaw

Like I said somewhere else, they should have done the soap box thing to make Donald look as tall as Connery- that would have solved my problem with him right there.

As you've already pointed out, It's a shame they couldn't
Get Telly for all three films ! :))

That this never happened is one of the biggest missed opportunities of the entire series.
