Taiwanese pirate editions of the Fleming books

Hi,

Does anyone else collect the Taiwanese pirate editions of the Fleming books? Some of them have really strange artwork (eg Diamonds Are Forever has the "flames" artwork stolen from the Cape edition of Moonraker).

These are the ones I have so far.

I would love to put together a complete set so if anyone has any others I would be interested in buying them / swapping (I have spare copies of DAF, CR and OHMSS).

Regards
Alan

Now if only the Fleming estate would see this and sue for an account of profits, that'd be great.

That's probably where they get their ideas and I hear that the Thunderball translation is of especial interest to them! 8-) :))

Are pirate books like the old pirate vhs tapes ?
Half way through the book the writing will go all
Blurry, and off to one side with the odd word missing.
Only to come near the end, with a bleed through from the
Porno story it was printed over ? :))

You've come across BOND STRIKES CAMP by Cyril Connolly?

Early 60s, Fleming's friend Cyril Connolly wrote a short story of that name.

Obviously, it's a parody, but written straight. M sends Bond to a transvestite club to track down a Ruskie. Bond obviously has to go in drag. M pitches up, ultimately, tells Bond it has just been a ruse to get him there and attempts to seduce him...

I didn't enjoy that story at all. It struck me as poorly written and harsh, unlike "Alligator" - which had a sense of fun and a love for Bond (or should I say B*nd? :) )
  • David SchofieldDavid Schofield EnglandPosts: 1,528MI6 Agent
Clearly, Connolly was having a go at the 60s Bond image (you know the one: men want to be him, women want to be with him...) and the Bond-M relationship of the novels against the background of the time - MI6, the Cambridge spies and homosexuality.

ALLIGATOR, alternatively, is just a genuine, fun 60s parody without much subtext, as you suggested.

I remember an interview with some of the Star Trek actors, who said there was
a stack of fan stories about their characters, which mainly involved them having
wild space sex. :)) ...... Is there anything like that in the Bond Fandom ?
or should I start writing now ? :))

I have no knowledge of this phenomenon...

Didn't we get almost that far with the sex scenes in Benson's professional fan fic? :#

I will always chuckle at the scene in DOUBLESHOT when Bond gives way his identity to the hench-female because during penetrative sex it is clear he has a much bigger nob than his double. :))

Bond does love that Jersey butter. ;)

    And he did attend Eton.

Huge shaft of opportunity for the Young Bond novelists to penetrate there. :o

I liked the covers of the Taiwanese editions. It reminded me of the Norwegian first edition of Casino Royale from 1954. What makes it interesting is how the artist managed to incorporate the title of the book into the cover drawing.

On a Great Pan Release of CR, Bond is depicted a being blond. Maybe they predicted Craig? :))

Nothing in the world of lit Bond could have predicted Craig-Bond.... ;)

Some of the 70s paperbacks around the world blonded Bond up in deference to Rog as the Bond du jour. The worst one is probably the tie-in edition of FYEO. :(

Deference to the incumbent being the case, I am pretty sure the white-tuxedoed Bond shooting on the cover of the UK paperback first of CS is based on good 'ole GL... :o
