Your favourite Bond vs. your favourite Non-Bond film....

chrisisallchrisisall Western Mass, USAPosts: 9,061MI6 Agent
That would be The Living Daylights and Serenity for me.

The heroes are both world-weary, but where James is working under the auspices of the 'system', Mal is pure rogue. Both have a sense of justice, both are ready to kill, and both take no joy in the process.
Both movies operate in worlds of greys as opposed to simplistic blacks & whites.
Both movies are travelogues on Earth and respectively in the new solar system.
Both movies see allies/friends killed (sacrificial lamb syndrome).
Both movies depict mistrust & difficulty in romance.
Both movies have an ultimate fight, but where Bond dispatches Necros & Whittaker, Reynolds lets The Operative live to see his evilness, and cannot fully destroy the Alliance.
In TLD Bond uses the Muhajadeen to help fight his enemies. In Serenity Mal uses the Reavers; both groups were empowered/created by their respective systems of Western Earth and futuristic Parliamentary Governments.
TLD has a happy ending whereas Serenity has a bitter-sweet one.
Lastly, TLD has the better soundtrack and Serenity has the better social commentary.
So, no question here as to a theme in my favourites, eh?

Now, many might not have so many similarities in their favourites...
Still, the assignment stands, and it will count towards your final grade, people. :007)
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

(I've got three favourite non-Bond movies so bear with me... :D )

The Spy Who Loved Me vs Alien

    - Retro-futurism and razor-toothed assailants... oh my!

Winner: Alien. It's the best movie of its kind.

The Spy Who Loved Me vs Blade Runner

    - Both films are visually gorgeous. Also: is that an all-seeing eye? ?:)

Winner: The Spy Who Loved Me, which never suffered from unfortunate post-production monologues.

The Spy Who Loved Me vs Inception

    - At least both movies feature an action scene on skis.

    Winner: Tie. (CUE INCEPTION HORN.)
"The secret agent. The man who was only a silhouette..." -- Ian Fleming, Moonraker

    1) The Spy Who Loved Me 2) On Her Majesty's Secret Service 3) GoldenEye 4) Casino Royale 5) Goldfinger

We are of similar minds about this one. Mine would be Goldfinger vs. The Godfather and as an overall film The Godfather wins hands down. (Although I'll bet Connery's Bond could take down the Corleone Family! :)) )

    OHMSS and The Last Crusade

Both Films show a more personal Side to the Character (Bond falling in Love and getting married and Indie's Dad and there Relationship over the Years)

    And obviously, both Films contain Bond Actors -{

I have a hard time comparing Bond films with non-Bond films. However, The Spy Who Loved Me will win against any contender.

    I also have a 3-way tie:

    Terminator 2
    Where Eagles Dare
    Red River

One pattern I am noticing is big name action stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood, and John Wayne.
Roger Moore is not in the same league as those dudes, but on the other hand, none of them are 007!

As much as I love Goldfinger (well-documented in this forum), I have to honest. Goldfinger has a few flaws, The Godfather has none.

I don't think comparing a favorite Bond film to a favorite film overall quite works for me, but I would compare a Bond film to one similar in tone and execution:

Goldfinger versus North by Northwest: The winner would be the latter. As good as Goldfinger is, North by Northwest is considerably more stylish and sophisticated. The dialogue is better, the villain at least as good, the henchman is creepy, and the romance is believable.

    Thunderball vs Charade
I would have to go with Charade most bc of Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. They are great together :) . But I still love Thunderball.

The true power of James Bond lies in no one particular film, but in the series as a whole. The same can be said of Star Trek.

I agree wholeheartedly. Bond films are a product which adhere to a certain formula per film. There are odd deviations along the way but by & large the template remains the same. Although you can compare Bond films, you can't compare them to standalone films where the writer, director, etc has a freedom of movement denied the Bond team. As Sam Mendes said, a Bond film is like being given all the furniture before the house has been built.

To this end, chrisisall is right, the real stength of Bond is in its longevity as a series rather than one specific film.

As for NBN VS. GF I'd say NORTH BY NORTHWEST is the better film because of its plot construction & sophistication of directing technique. As good as Guy Hamilton is, he cannot compare with The Master of Suspense.

They are so similar to me (even Sam Mendes admitted to lifting certain elements from Dark Knight for Skyfall). Personally I much prefer Dark Knight, although it's been a while since my last viewing, and in any case would argue that Dark Knight is by far the most influential of the two.

That being said, I felt like Captain America: The Winter Soldier was very heavily influenced by Skyfall.

I think I prefer The Dark Knight Rises over that Quantum of Solace mess. Christopher Nolan is just a better storyteller and a better filmmaker than Marc Forster.

    Chrisisall,

If you love Serenity then you might also want to check out a James Bond film called Moonraker:

The heroes are both world-weary, but where James is working under the auspices of the 'system', Mal is pure rogue. Both have a sense of justice, both are ready to kill, and both take no joy in the process.
Both movies operate in worlds of greys as opposed to simplistic blacks & whites.

Both movies have an ultimate fight.
In Moonraker Bond uses the Marines to help fight his enemies. In Serenity Mal uses the Reavers; both groups were empowered/created by their respective systems of Western Earth and futuristic Parliamentary Governments.
Moonraker has a happy ending whereas Serenity has a bitter-sweet one.
Lastly, Moonraker has the better soundtrack and better social commentary.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service vs. North by Northwest.

Sorry, but as much as I love OHMSS, it doesn't hold a candle to Hitch's classic. And pitting George Lazenby (first-timer who does a very good job, but a novice nonetheless) against Cary Grant (the single greatest movie star in the history of film) is the very definition of "unfair".
    Hilly...you old devil!
