James Bond vs Ethan Hunt

Is there one (or more) Mission: Impossible movie that rates well against the Bond movies for you? Personally, all 4 of them are better than many Bonds IMO, but cracking my top five? M:I 2 would be just after TND (#3), but I think that's the only one. And I see many similarities in M:I 2 & TND come to think of it...

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to discuss, compare & contrast the two franchises. :D
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

    M: is more of your straight up Hollywood Blockbuster Franchise. Which is funny because the Television Series it's based on is far different and more in line with Bond -{

    I like M:I1 as I felt it has a good espionage thriller feel to it. Love the scenes in Prague and London. Tom Cruise looks very good throughout. Good supporting cast.

    I was so dissapointed by M:I2. Really not a fan of John Woo and all that slow motion c**p. Thandie Newton is very pleasing on the eye but I just find her annoying in this film, along with all the repetitive doe eyed looks between Nyah and Ethan.

    M:I3 and 4 were better in my opinion and I'm looking forward to 5 :)

    Interesting to read your opinions on Mission: Impossible, but now can you compare them (favourably or unfavourably) to the Bond films?

    M:I Was very good
    M:2 Was not a bad Film, but it was bland and repetitive.
    M:3 Was alright, but the Story was a bit daft.
    M:4 Was the best so far.

    I'm really looking forward to the new Film. I would say that the Films (And the Television Series) have been inspired by the Bond Franchise. What Action/Espionage Film hasn't since GF?

    Great thread, chrisisall! -{

    IMO TND and MI:2 are the closest. The look and feel are very similar, with some great stunts and snappy dialogue.

    MI:1 has more of an early Connery, FRWL espionage-type feel to it. The plot and acting are great (doesn't TC look young in it though!) courtesy of probably the best cast in the series.

    I enjoyed some of MI:3 but felt the whole rabbit's foot plot device was a Hitchcock- maguffin and a bit annoying, so I'd say it's the equivalent of the maguffins in TSWLM or FYEO (tracking device and ATAK respectively). Using Ethan's wife to make it personal is a nice touch, so there are elements of the Craig films IMO which have also made the recent plots personal.

    MI:4 is probably my favourite to date, the level of humour, the action set pieces and the plot are all spot on. The scenes in the Burj Al-Khalifa are genuinely nail biting. So I'm gonna go with Goldeneye, for its humour and stunts, crossed with OHMSS for the tension. :007)

    I read somewhere that Cast of the original Television Series hated the First Film when it came out.

    :)) Oh yeah, forgot about that bit!

    I agree that they are very Hollywood blockbuster type films and probably have more free rein than Bond. (More often than not Bond does have to stick to a certain recipe) I would say TND compares more than any other Bond film. I think M:I1 can hold its own against GE and I remember watching it at the cinema a year after GE, thinking this is great and refreshing.

    Being a fan of the original series I disliked what they did to Jim Phelps in the first film and have yet to watch any of the others. Though I did watch a clip recently of Tom Cruise performing an aerial stunt for the new film. Not particularly a fan of Cruise but I admire him for doing that, and for the way he appears to give time and respect to his fans.

    They have been trying to replicate an American 007 since in like Flint.

    M:I1 is a full on spy thriller. A team working together, we don't discover the villain until near the end, all good stuff.

    M:I2 is like a bond film; Hunt is working more on his own in this one, and I think is similar to TWINE: a few good action scenes, but ultimately incredibly boring.

    M:I3 is a mix of Bond and M:I1, but is ultimately disappointing.

    M:I4 is the only one I feel you could take Hunt out, put Bond in, and it still be a good Bond film.

    funny you bring this up...I am doing a M:I marathon! I have enjoyed them all, with M:I2 being my least fav. 3 and 4 are the best for sheer entertainment value...for me. I am about to start watching M:I4 soon...I have only seen it once before. the question of bond or hunt...DC v.s TC...Bond eats Hunt for breakfast! ;)

    Personally, M:I 2 is my least favorite. Too much fooling around with rubber masks, probably to cover up a fairly weak script. Which does match TND, come to think of it :D

    In very many ways 4 was really the best, but 2 was the most lushly photographed, had Dougray Scott as a villain, and some of the snappiest dialogue ever.
