Everyone is just too tough on Roger Moore

Way too harsh on himself, but his self-effacing sense of humour is why we love him so much.

    Personality-wise and as screen icons, Sir Roger and Sir Sean are giants among Bonds. -{

First, Roger is 87, not 85. Second, he did not actually say that he was the fourth best Bond. In typical self deprecating manner, I actually think Roger was rating himself as the sixth best Bond. Without being dis-respectful to George Lazenby, he perceives him to be the least favourite Bond amongst the masses.

Moore was one of my favorite Bonds, but I personally don't find his self-deprecation honest.

Of course it's not honest but more toungue-in-the-cheek.

Yeah, when I philander around, make 8 figures, get married and divorced almost as much as Larry King, I'd probably use humor as a defense mechanism too.

As always - you are failing to see the larger picture ;%

Imo Moore is a genuinely harmony-driven guy that follows his gut a lot.
I remember how he's speaking about leaving Luisa and it seems that he behaved like a gentlemen.

If you get to know him a bit better, you'll realize that he's taking his UNICEF work very seriously and he tries to get along with everyone.

Besides of his famous humor, I have not met someone who was speaking bad about him - everybody seems to like him.

Moore has always debunked his own acting abilities- see some quotes here: http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/r/roger_moore.html

The truth is he's absolutely fine at what he does. He doesn't have a wide range, but that doesn't make him a bad actor- just a specialised one, and so what? So are many, many other actors- Christopher Lee specialises in playing villains and no-one ever complains, John Wayne spent ?50 years specialising in cowboys and did just fine, etc etc.

Before anyone points out that Lee did play a few heroes and Wayne also played soldiers or cops, it's not what they're famous for or are remembered as. Moore did step outside his cultivated hero persona a few times, too, but that isn't what he's known for.

Some actors are chameleons, and can "disappear" inside a part (Gary Oldman can do this, for example), while some just stick to what they are good at.

Exactly. Moore's Bond is akin to an older Simon Templar, and that's not necessarily a bad thing

Moore is just a bit out of fashion these days. He belongs to the English gentleman era, of David Niven and Ronald Coleman. If Hugh Grant had done The Saint for two decades, maybe that would be more of a thing nowadays, but his camp style is a bit too awkward. I never saw it at the time. Sometimes he is very good, other times he is pretty bad, but again nowadays it's the laconic type we expect as action hero.

I like Roger's humourous portrayal. Whenever i feel down and need a laugh, i put on one of his films.

Like I've said it somewhere in AJB before, don't hate the player hate the play: The excellent war movie Wild Geese shows tougher and grittier Roger Moore, he could have IMHO easily handled the same scripts that Daniel "2short2blond2tight" Graig gets praise for. Moore only got the sh4ft in the form of crappy scripts.

I do not hate RM as a Bond, but I positively loath RM Era!

I've also heard Sir Rog refer to himself as the best Bond and TSWLM as the best Bond film.
