If DAD had been the 1987 Bond film...

...do you think it would have been a greater success or not?

With it being the 25th anniversary of Bond in cinema, and all the homages and nods to the previous films, would you think audiences back then would have appreciated all the elements, overlooked the laughable special effects, and made it a massive SF-type success?

    He knew what would work and what didn't work. I am still amazed that Michael G and Babs let it through - and i can only think that Tamahori pushed for all the **** to go through. So far, it stands up how not to do a Bond film

    Broccoli would not allow the laughable special effects to go through. Mickey G and Babs i don't think had total control of the franchise. That didn't happen to Casino Royale...

    Like Broadshoulder said, I really doubt that Cubby would have given it the Green Light.

    If Dalton was Bond I doubt he would have touched the final script with a bargepole either since he wanted to go back to Fleming style!

    They would have asked Moore back for another. He would have done it. He even proved ten years later in The Quest that he could fence, so he would have been perfect for DAD.

    I could imagine Moores Bond getting tortured for Months on end. Every dunking into Water or Whip across the Back would be followed by a 'Thank you!'

    Bond would be fifty seven when he left in AVTAK
    DAD came out in 2002
    Roger Moore will be 75..

    And people complained he was too old in AVTAK..

    If it had been made in the 1980s, the production would have been quite different. Instead of the CGI, we would have gotten more physical special effects, which would have rendered the look of the film quite different. North Korea, though hostile to the U.S. for more than 50 years, was not really on the radar for people as a threat. The film more likely would have been set in a different Asian country. Dalton would have been at least as convincing as Brosnan was, but I doubt they would have paired him up with a biracial Black-White female. It's not that Bond hasn't been with women of color, obviously, but the 1980s were in many ways a step backwards regarding such things, and they had already just been "risque" with A View to a Kill. That was more of a novelty, whereas Jinx was a love interest. At that said, I think the film would have been no more a hit in the box office than it was later, adjusted for inflation.
