How Incompetent is Craig's MI:6?

Gassy ManGassy Man USAPosts: 2,972MI6 Agent
I was reflecting after watching Spectre about just how bad a secret service Craig seems to work for.

In four movies, it's

Been infiltrated by moles at the highest level.
Had its top secret computer systems hacked.
Been blown up not once but twice.
Suffered scores of casualties.
Allowed a highly dangerous capture to escape.
Allowed agents to go rogue and then come back and then go rogue again.
Allowed agents to go off with valuable equipment.
Seen its leader's computer hacked and home infiltrated.
Seen its leader nearly assassinated, as well as its future leader.
Seen its leader kidnapped and later lost in the field.
Been repeatedly called on the carpet by others.
Been repeatedly embarrassed in the media.
Been wholly unaware of not one but two supersecret international criminal organizations (well, I guess sort of aware of Spectre).
Been wholly unaware of the secret bases of various enemies, despite satellites and GPS.
Failed to fully vet its own agents as well as its enemies.
Offered as its best agent a pill-popping alcoholic with depression, anti-social behavior, and unresolved childhood issues.

I mean, gone are the days when it was a fairly competent organization with the occasional slip up. Sure, there are double crosses and betrayals in many of the Bond films, but Craig's tenure suggests it's time to send in the clowns when you think about it.

Trusted a new agent over an experienced agent.

The incompetence of MI6 (not MI:6), as well as Bond, in Craig's films has really bothered me. When characters mess up, it works in sitcoms. Not so much for a Bond film.

This was never the case in old m's days (Bernard Lee) he wouldn't have tolerated this going Rogue nonsense!
MI6 is really coming across inept lately, it would be shut down if it really resembled bonds agency.
It was either that.....or the priesthood

Good point. Seems to me that with the freedom within the Bond universe that's required in some of these films means that some fundamental laws (from the early films) get broken.

M's actions in TWINE would also probably get her sacked...plus, they had a bomb go off at HQ too.

Oh tosh, it's merely an attempt to show the British Secret Service to be as inept as the Americans to up the box office in the States. :))

Not sure what you mean by this one, as Bond is often given valuable equipment by Q and rarely brings it back in one piece.

Although, he definitely stole that DB10 in Spectre.

Great list though….most of them can be found in Skyfall. One of the reasons why it ranks dead last in my rankings. The sheer incompetence of MI6 in that film drives me nuts. M stalling for time in court when she is given information that Silva is coming for her and thus leads to a massacre in the courtroom. The fact that Silva even escaped in the first place is a mystery. And don't even get me started on how that was all part of his master plan. Ridiculous. Bond taking M to his childhood home to withstand an attack as if that was even remotely a good idea.

And what's with Bond breaking into M's home in CR? That was sure strange.

Some of that comes from Fleming, but I still find Craig's Bond hard to warm up to. Well, until Spectre.

Yep, I was referring to the DB10, though one could argue that he steals M's car, too. One has to wonder if Q really has the authority to let Bond just have the DB5, especially if he is no longer in the service, which seems to be implied.

Craig's Bond frequently makes off with MI6 women, too.

Thats been going on since the Roger Moore days

I think the big falling out is Judi Denchs M. Her following that guy in TWINE could get her sacked

Mind you, I like the hearing she's dragged to the hearing in Skyfall which is all open and above board. The worse/best thing they have done is evoke "Cameron's cuts". Death by Austerity. Just to save a few pennies. That would have finished off Q Branch and the 007 section years ago...

Because 'the old MI6' was a fantasy organisation; where submarine picks you up on a Japanese sea, and mini submarine gets you out of Siberia. We were living in a fantasy world.

This one is much more realistic.

But Bond's indiscretions are ordinarily with the tacit approval of his organization -- Q lets him leave with a car or he gets the girl at the end. He does commandeer Caruso, but she's not MI6. Craig outright steals and kidnaps.

As though the new MI6 isn't a fantasy organization, too -- the only government agency that rivals its incompetence and is still operating is the DMV. Of the one in the Connery era versus the one in the Craig era, the Connery one is much more realistic in that it isn't staffed by a bunch of incompetents and depressives.

How does that correspond with the British MI6?

I will tell you what has been going on with government organisations. They've been slashed. Austerity all over the shop. So the removal of "00's" and Q Branch rang bells.

The real world intruded into MI6?

I heartily concur; also Bernard Lee would never have been such a micromanaging b1tch of a boss as Judie Dench was. Bernards M contented him self for having field agents (for example Strangways) to report once a day to the comms. section (which some agents called a bitch of a habit). Flemings Bond liked a more oblique control, he communicated with telegrams via caribian. Dench liked to scream directly into the ear of an field agent, in middle of a hot pursuit, on a conference phone!!!

Thinking about it - Dench's M was pretty crap

Her weak point was ordering Moneypenny to fire that gun into the back of Bond, and his demise into the river. Granted, she was working blind, through a speaker phone, but there has to be a different way..

And also when she met up with Bond. No apology."Well, your not staying here" Judi Dench's M wasn't very likeable

What I find the most laughable is in CR M specifically tells Bond "don't ever break into my house again", yet in SF he does it again. How Craig's Bond remains employed is the greatest mystery of all.

M changed houses in all three of her Craig films! Maybe they move her around for security purposes. Which obviously doesn't work since Bond has no problem finding her home. :))
