I just saw Spectre for the first time!

Disappointed perhaps sums up my experience. I was only half expecting this latest film to be better than Skyfall & indeed it was yet how those responsible still manage to spin out a 'storyline' over two & a half hours which at a push should have lasted no more than thirty minutes is a testament to their continued commitment to style over substance. On this occasion those responsible were indeed the authors of my pain. Sterile characters throughout & the stop start nature of the action began to grate from the point Madeline Swann made her appearance. I will go as far as to say that this will be my last new Bond film, at least until those in the driving seat learn that there is much more to James Bond than what they seem committed to produce.

Bond, Bond wherefore art thou James Bond?

It's a shame you feel like this stag, it's hard being a fan if Bond sometimes, I think in mist films these days of this genre the plot and story are second to other aspects, it's my opinion this is to appeal to worldwide audiences. I've enjoyed Spectre more the more I've seen it. I wonder how well moonraker would fare in the modern box office or even frwl for that matter?

Frankly I wasn't expecting much so therefore wasn't all that disappointed. Being first & foremost a fan of the literary Bond (IFs Bond) I shall resign myself to reading & watching the vintage films - up to & including LTK.

Personally for me it was LTK. Yes I know it's controversial. I just cannot warm to Craig - not so much him as I don't think he's a bad Bond, it's more a case of the direction the franchise has taken.

Not as bad as the Moore years surely. The literary Bond is my anchor too, so I know your pain, but Flemings Bond was last seen in OHMSS for me, or arguably FRWL. I just see the films and IF books as two very different entities as much as I seperate the Bond and Bourne/MI films. Craig looks nothing like Bond, he looks like a thug and walks like a thug. But I do enjoy him in the role and he's on the same level as Connery now for me. I can't believe I'm saying it, but I like his performances. It doesn't make sense.

I agree on the writing though. It's not been any good in decades. Casino Royale being a slight exception.

To ME, LTK was the last of the classic Bonds. I consider GE to be the first actual reboot.
I'm able to adapt & find fun in most any Bond movie, but I'll have to admit, these days it's just not the same...

I understand what you mean, I've become frustrated with the whole personal storyline and I crave bond to undertake a proper sanctioned mission.
I do love the literary Bond, but I enjoy the films for different reasons, I was and still am disappointed that Craigs bond shifted from CR and QoS style, I thought Craig was continuing from Timothy Dalton in an up to date way. Holding Dalton in high regard is not controversial IMHO if you want to be controversial try being a fan of qos.
Ive been a Daniel Craig fan for years before he was bond and also as a lifelong bond fan it's a perfect union for me and so I enjoy all his bond films, Despite their failings.
As it happens I enjoy all the bond films for different reasons, I'm quite happy to watch any Bond film at any time :)

I like Dan as bond ,I think he's the best since Connery and I think spectre has everything a bond film should have .ive got my fingers crossed for Dan coming back for one more film.i personally think that ltk is one of the weaker bond films as is moonraker/octopussy and tomorrow never dies .i can't find fault with any of Dan's bond films all 4 are fantastic.

I think I can see ,where my learned friend Agent Stag is coming from ( but I am very surprised he has waited the best part of 5 months to see it :D ) The literary Bond ,is more colourful ,The Human brain ,the most powerful computer the world has ever seen ,has to shall we say cut and paste, the minds eye images into a story , that can make sense. This is where the real juice is to be found .Stag and TP and SM could sit down and read the same book at the same time ,and if we had the technology to wire their brains to a visual screen ,we would get 3 different films . (and 3 very good ones to boot ) :) So im sort of in Stags camp on this one .
By the way, did I tell you, I was "Mad"?

Thank you, but you obviously haven't heard my records.... :))

Na, seriously, I'd love to just see M give Bond a mission which he then pursues: the slogan to be "James Bond 007 is back. This time, it isn't personal".

I've no real issues with Craig as Bond - even though he is more shop steward than officer & gentleman - my gripe lies squarely with the writing. Yes the whole rogue/privateer thing is irritating & I would just love to see Bond back where he belongs - on Her Majesty's service rather than his own.

As for Spectre I just feel it was another opportunity wasted. The wafer thin plot which could not stand up to drive by scrutiny, the 'motivation' of Blofeld, the predictable set pieces. I could go on.

I have felt for some time (since QoS in fact) that the franchise needs reboot 2 in order to let it get back to Bond basics. This need not nor should not mean going into reverse, quite the opposite in fact. It needn't involve cast changes either. Just give Craig something he can really get his teeth into - a solid story with solid villains is all he needs.

I have decided time try and stop thinking about Spectre, as the more I do the worse it gets. I have watched it three times (only once in the cinema which tells it's own story as I usually see them at least twice) and severe diminishing returns have set in, it's still top 10 for me (just) ?:)

I certainly enjoy SPECTRE much more then Skyfall which I think is good but def overrated

I would prob rate the DC era as:

    1) Casino Royale
    2) SPECTRE
    3) QOS
    4) SkyFall

PS - talking of ratings whats happened to him who rates everything :) ?

At the risk of repeating myself I place the blame squarely on the script. As with SF & to a lesser extent QoS the writers have become lazy, placing emphasis on cinematics above story. That anyone can take the bare bones of what has the potential to be a good story & do nothing to exploit it to it's fullest advantage is again indicative of this laziness.
  • stagstag Posts: 2,083MI6 Agent
BTW someone mentioned why it took me five months to watch Spectre. I pointed this out elsewhere. The fact is I don't do Cinemas. I bought the DVD upon it's release.

Unless there is a seismic shift away from what has become the pattern for the films It will be the last new Bond film I will watch.
