Release Dates/Filming Dates

Slightly confused here. When we see that a film has a release/filming date i.e. 1962 (Dr No), does that date mean that it was released then or is it simply a filming date?

That's the release date. Dates on the back of DVDs are years of release. Also the dates attatched to films on IMDb are when they were released.

Often films are made in the same year they're released, but it doesn't really matter because when people say a film was 'made' in 1962, it means it was released then.

Ah, right!

I always thought the date on the back of the DVD was the filming year, but now I know it isn't necessarily that but is probably the release date!
