Casino Royale vs. Cinema 2006

2006 was an amazing year in film for me. One of the best I can remember for years, and Casino Royale has the honor of being among the highest rated films.

Being the film critic for my school paper, I saw 48 movies from last year, many of which were big blockbusters that turned out to be disappointing, and that people have already probably forgotten: Mission: Impossible III, The Da Vinci Code, Superman Returns, Pirates 2, X-Men 3, Flags of Our Fathers, Saw III, etc.

Here is my top 20 list of the year, the king of which is CR, of course. Take a look at the excellence it was up against (except the last two, those were quite dumb but just fun as hell)...

Casino Royale
Pan's Labyrinth
Little Miss Sunshine
United 93
The Departed
Letters from Iwo Jima
The Queen
Children of Men
Blood Diamond
Borat
Stranger Than Fiction
V for Vendetta
The Fountain
Thank You For Smoking
The Prestige
Brick
The Last Kiss
Apocalypto
Lucky Number Slevin
Snakes on a Plane (yes, SOAP was a favorite :p)

I never saw Babel, Volver, Venus, or Little Children, and I heard all were great. It would probably change my list up quite a bit. But where do you guys rate CR in relation to the rest of the year?

The film buff in me tells me that, from an artistic, thematic standpoint, it is not at all the best film of the year. But I'm a Bond nut, what can I say? A bias is a bias.

Pirates 2 was dissapointing? The box office takings don't say the same story.

It depends how your rating the films. CR was definitely one of the top films I saw, but Borat was the funniest film for me that I have ever seen, let alone last year.
