what do you mean 'activate' them, They are on the right hand side when posting a message, beside the box.

i know but when i post them they come up as signs and not the smiley

you might not be leaving a gap between them ? It sometimes does that to me

The smilies will be text representations in the text box they are only ever converted when a post is displayed. Spaces are sometimes required depending on what is before the smiley.

The smilies should be activated by default anyway at the right hand side of the page, when you make a post reply.
