Sad to hear of the deaths of Jack Hedley and Sally Ann Howes.

Bishop Desmond Tutu, the South African anti-apartheid activist, has died aged 90. I thank him for being a force for good.

RIP actress Betty White, 99. She would have turned 100 in a few weeks time.

Sad to hear that, she of course was one of the relatively younger ones in The Golden Girls, the ditzy and sexually naive Rose.

Like Prince Philip, she joins the 99 club.

BBC iPlayer will no doubt have its tribute to those who've died this year. But as with virtually every year, there seems to be a few more to come in after they've put it out just around Christmas week - in this case they got in Sally Ann Howes but not Desmond Tutu, for instance. They might have added them now but without wanting to sound facile it can interrupt the carefully crafted show where one person's life then segues into another.

2016 was particularly bad for this, with Quo's Rick Parfitt then George Michael passing away in Christmas week.

Yes 2016 was awful, the roster of familiar names that left us was quite staggering.

    RIP Betty White.

RIP Sidney Poitier, 94. A true Hollywood icon.

If anyone is looking for a Bond connection to Poitier, the bridge that links the Bahamas' New Providence island (home to Thunderball's Villa Palmyra, former home to Sean Connery, etc etc) and Paradise Island (home to Casino Royale's Ocean Club, etc etc), is the Sir Sidney Poitier Bridge!

I still remember Poitier's performance in "In the heat of the night" even though it's been decades since I saw it. One of his last movies must've been in "BlackKlansman". What a career!

That's sad news. A great ground breaking actor. LILLIES OF THE FIELD, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, THE DEFIANT ONES, all great performances. RIP Sidney Poitier

  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 21,765MI6 Agent

I'm embarrased to say I mixed up Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte in BlackKlansman. Poitier had a great career regardless, Sneakers and "Shoot to kill" brings back fond memories.

By coincidence, so did Grandad, in the very first episode of Only Fools And Horses where he mistakes Belafonte for Poitier in a film on the tv.

RIP Sidney Poitier, I loved his performance in To Sir With Love.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

Nils Arne Eggen, one of the best ever Norwegian football coaches, died aged 80 today. I usually don't care about football, but Eggen was known for being a quote machine:

    • Real Madrid? At least they tried, I'll give them that!
    • Shut up! I've been here since 1960! (To a player complaining he'd been on the football field since twelve o'clock)
    • The weather will be very good. We'll play between the low preasussure fronts!
    • Get you finger out! Everyone who needs fresh air, get out on the football field and start shoveling snow! (When a game was about to get cancelled because of snowfall. Then he grabbed a shovel and the game was saved.)
    • It's no good playing defensive against Lerkendal FC, you know. It's like sending Salman Rushdie on a bicycle on the streets of Teheran - you just don't do it!

Eggen sometimes had to speak English. He did this very well, in the sense it was really entertaining. When he didn't know the English word he just "Englishified" the Norwegian word.

    • Oh, you're not driving yourself? Good brain!
    • My grammar is bad, but my meaning is good!
    • Juventus is the world's best team - in the world!
    • I'm the coach, but I speak nicht Deutsch .. ( to a Swiss journalist)
    • It's hope in a hanging snore! A fishing-snore! (fishing line)
    • We play with two stoppers and two spisses (point guard position)!

Thank you, Nils Arne, for making football a litt bit entertaining even for me.

Just read that Hardy Kruger has died aged 93.

Coincidentally I was watching The Wild Geese last week and reflected that he was the last of the big 4 mercs still alive, with Burton, Harris and dear old Sir Rog passing already.

Also starred in “The One that Got Away”, a memorable ‘50’s POW film.

    Barry Cryer has died 😢

An absolute legend of the comedy world, he wrote for just about all the greats and was a talented stand-up himself.

He was the wine waiter in the original The Four Yorkshiremen sketch….and a regular on both Just A Minute and I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue on the radio…a true underrated comedy giant…RIP 🍸

I've long recalled Barry Cryer's line about getting old from a few years back, where he claimed he didn't even risk buying green bananas any more.

He seemed to have a stockpile of jokes but also as importantly fresh ones hot off the press. I was surprised - but also not surprised - to see his name in the credits on the recent reshowings of the Kenny Everett Show on that channel you find past Talking Pictures, I think it's That's TV! or something. He was very versatile.

His new jokes would be regulars in the Times Diary column. They always had an edge to them.

RIP Barry Cryer. Absolute legend of great British comedy. The word legend is oft overused, but Lord Barry of Cryer thoroughly deserves to be regarded as such.

Yesterday's Times and Barry Cryer's last joke - you'll have to drag it off the page and onto your desktop to read it. His Obit also crammed with his jokes.

RIP Howard Hesseman aka Dr Johnny Fever

this scene from WKRP in Cincinatti helped make me a Pink Floyd fan for life

he also hosted two early 80s episodes of Saturday Night Live when Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss were in the cast. In one of his monologs he mooned a portrait of Reagan and encouraged viewers at home to do the same and mail in their home photos as proof! a fine deejay and an upstanding patriotic citizen!

Sad to hear of the death of the Italian actress Monica Vitti today at the age of 91. She'd sadly been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease for many years and died from complications from the disease. I will have to watch Modesty Blaise in her honour. I've had it on DVD for a while but not gotten around to watching it yet. I'll make that a priority now though.

This woman had an incredible life…starting with typing out Steptoe & Son scripts for Galton & Simpson, then representing an absolute who’s who in the comedy/writing world (Howard, Milligan, Sykes to name but three)…she was involved in many films and tv shows…if you’ve watched tv in the UK then you’ve watched something she was involved with...thanks, Beryl 🍸

I'm a few days late noticing this one but

    RIP Ian McDonald 1946 - 2022

founding member of King Crimson, then of the much less interesting Foreigner

McDonald's all over Court of the Crimson King, not just the sax parts but the mellotron that dominates the album

he was only a member for that first King Crimson album, but Robert Fripp has since released a bunch of live stuff from that original lineup, and immediately after leaving the band McDonald recorded the album McDonald and Giles with drummer Michael Giles, that every Crimson fan should own. He makes a cameo on the closing track of Red

here is the only known footage of the original King Crimson, here opening for the Stones at Hyde Park 1969
