Agreed all round, you've all been great company and I've certainly watched the film with fresh eyes. Thanks especially Number 24 for organising this evening! {[]
This was fun and it couldn't have been done without all of you
A special thanks to Gymkata for great GIF work.
It's a relief to see non-Bond watchalongs can work.
Are you onboard for a Where Eagles Dare watchalong in a few weeks?
I will certainly endeavor to be there...

Gandalf: James Mason
Aragorn/Strider: Sean Connery
Frodo: Ringo Starr
Samwise: George Harrison
Merry: Paul McCartney
Pippin: John Lennon
Boromir: Stanley Baker
Gimli: Oliver Reed (can't think of anyone better at that time)
Legolas: John Hurt
Gollum: Lloyd Bridges ("Sure picked the wrong day for giving up coveting rings")
Arwen: Jane Fonda
Galadriel: Audrey Hepburn
Eowyn: Judi Dench
Faramir: Robert Redford
Grima Wormtongue: Vincent Price (though Edward G is a better choice)
and of course
Saruman: Christopher Lee
Captain Troy Tempest - Gregory Peck
Lieutenant George Lee 'Phones' Sheridan - Richard Harris
Commander Sam Shore - James Robertson Justice
Marina - Gia Scala
Atlanta Shaw - Lois Maxwell (I don't have the heart to re-cast this one!)
King Titan of Titanica - Albert Lieven
Aquaphibian #1 - Bob Simmons
End credits song 'Aqua Marina' performed by James Darren
Also: Here's the scene from 'Reservoir Dogs' of which Miller's indignation with Mallory over Franklin reminds me: it's tempting to think that when White loses his temper with Pink, Keitel is channelling Niven's delivery (although of course Buscemi entirely lacks Peck's cool). Not inconceivable, given Tarantino's card-carrying movie geekery. And Michael Madsen's quiet intervention at the end of the clip echoes Quinn's style.
The next couple of months I will have visitors, but I plan to organise the Where Eagles Dare watchalong next month.
If there are other movies we want to see in a watchalong we can suggest it here and maybe watch it later. Even better, you can organise a watchalong!

Some excellent suggestions!
Bear in mind, I'm competing against 15 other drafters. Once an actor is gone (somebody has drafted him/her), they're gone. Hence why I need backups.
For the four Hobbits: going with the Beatles was my very first idea. I suspect that others are thinking the same so I was contemplating other musicians. If I can get all four of the Beatles (vain hope), I'll do so.
For Gandalf and Strider/Aragorn: I had Burton and Eastwood as my first choices to keep with the WHERE HOBBITS DARE theme. I'm pretty sure that Burton will be an early, early pick and I may not get him, so James Mason is a definite possibility. I do have him on my backup list and I like the idea of pairing him with Sean Connery. Then again, I suspect that Connery may very well be the first overall pick of the draft.
Stanley Baker as Boromir is a fantastic suggestion. I'm rolling with that.
Jane Fonda as Arwen is not bad. I'm leaning towards Charlotte Rampling mainly due to her ethereal quality, though.
Everything else is great. Hadn't thought of Redford. To that end...and this is vain hope indeed....pairing up Redford and Newman for Strider and Boromir would be fun. No way that's happening.
Thanks!

"I'm watching" Suicide squad" on TV, a movie a about The Shetland Gang with mostly real SOE agents playing. themselves. It's a lot like the boat part of Guns of Navarone!
Perhaps after Where Eagles Dare and Force 10, we should continue the Alistair Maclean theme with Ice Station Zebra?
I watched When Eight Bells Toll yesterday (which is available on YouTube) which very much has a sort of alternate Bond feel, with Anthony Hopkins in the lead. It's not amazing (certainly no Eagles Dare) but pretty decent fun for a Sunday afternoon.

Haven't seen it for years- I'll have to watch it again.
a quick update on my 1960s set LOTR draft so far:
Gandalf: Richard Burton
Aragorn/Strider: Clint Eastwood
Boromir: Stanley Baker
Legolas: Alain Delon
Frodo: Harrison Ford
Samwise: William Shatner
I've settled on the three names for my trilogy of films:
WHERE HOBBITS DARE
THE GUNS OF PELENNOR
ICE STATION MORDOR (except maybe FIRE STATION MORDOR)
Barbel:
I've lost the following suggestions on your list to other drafters:
James Mason
Sean Connery
Ringo Starr
George Harrison
Paul McCartney
John Lennon
Oliver Reed
Robert Redford
Vincent Price
Christopher Lee

I wanted someone slightly older than Ford to be the sort of mentor. Sam also has a lot of emotional heavy lifting in the film and Shatner can do that with his usual hammy style.
As an update:
Gandalf: Richard Burton
Aragorn: Clint Eastwood
Boromir: Stanley Baker
Legolas: Alain Delon
Gimli: Anthony Quinn
Frodo: Harrison Ford
Sam: William Shatner
Merry: Robert Conrad
Pippin: James Darren
Gollum: John Cassavetes
Galadriel: Brigitte Bardot
That's where I'm at so far today. I have one more pick today and then three more tomorrow.

"I don't want to play your stupid game - I want to play MY game and everyone else should join me!"
Based on this mature consept, here is the 80s LOTR, or
Raiders of the lost ring
Frodo - Michael J. Fox or Ian Holm
Gandalf - Sean Connery
Saruman - Max von Sydow
Legolas - Jonny Depp
Aragorn - Daniel Day Lewis or Liam Neeson
Galadriel - Michelle Pfeiffer
Boromir - Ruther Hauer
Gimli - Kurt Russel
Arwen - Emmanuelle Beart
Gollum - Ben Kingley
Grima Wormtongue - Joe Pesci or Christopher Walken
Faramir - Kevin Costner
and I picture Connery doing his Agamemnon from TIME BANDITS for Gandalf.
For me, I think the way to do it in the 80s would be more of a B-Action/Carolco route.
Gandalf: Michael Ironside
Aragorn: Arnold Schwarzenegger
Boromir: James Remar
Legolas: Jean Claude Van Damme
Gimli: Sonny Landham
Directed by Paul Verhoeven with a score by Basil Poledouris.

I would really like to see Kurt Russel's Gimli and especially Jonny Depp's Legolas
