Peck's performance is the lynchpin of this entire movie, imho, and he's a great foil for Niven's set-piece theatrical speeches.

You find Niven more theatrical than Peck? I'm the opposite.

Why are the Germans in snow camouflage? I remember we were always making sure we used white camouflage correctly.

Andreas picks off only the enemy soldiers who seem to assume a leading role... authentic guerilla tactics.

Quinn's quiet, "Good evening, gentlemen..." He'd have made a great Blofeld, or Draco...

    Largo.

For which part he was in fact considered (early on).

The actress playing Anna had mental problems, something that caused delays and problems. A decade later she sadly took her own life :#

James Darren and Irene Papas's brother/ sister relationship here is quickly established, but the film does absolutely nothing else with that (except in some brief dialogue at the end when she asks Quinn how her brother died). In a different context, her slapping of James Darren is a bit like Paris Carver slapping Brosnan's face for walking out on her.

The actor playing Spiros Papadimos reminds me of Walter Koenig from STAR TREK.

And he did, in fact, turn up in STAR TREK about 30 years later as a lounge singer (James Darren was a pro singer, acting was a sideline).

The Germans running down the steps to see the team has fled is much like Blofeld and his men bursting open the barn doors to find Bond and Tracey have departed in OHMSS.

So the two female characters here...they are men in the book? do they serve the same function in the book in terms of character purpose?

    Basically, yes.

Yes, very much so. This guy was a pop star, possibly cast to bring in the youth market. Thus his singing later on.

I can't see James Darren without thinking of The Time Tunnel, a staple Irwin Allen series from my childhood like Lost in Space and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

Exciting Stuka action. Some good effects with rubble flying everywhere in the explosions.

In real life most of the team would be his age.

That's true, but this is the movies. We have to accept that.

...and now we have the bit where James Darren sings. Possibly a contractual obligation?

Some of this Greek village stuff reminds me a bit of FYEO. I'm keeping an eye out for Michael G Wilson as a priest ;)

That 'local guy' is arguably as good a singer as Darren.

This folk tune - Yalo Yalo - is one that seems to be in my head an awful lot. I'm often heard whistling the melody. I assume it was written by Tiomkin.
