Buying Bond Artwork

Hi,

I’m thinking about buying some bond artwork. Been considering the recent Greg Williams 007 collection, or looking at buying some original movie posters, however not able to afford both, so weighing up my options.

I already own the “Dia de Muerta” print that was given to cast by Sam Mendes that you can see in Spectre. Love the print in my home office.

Has anyone else bought Bond artwork, and would you consider it a good investment?

GW photos are always stunning. From an enjoyment perspective can't recommend hanging one or more. They bring great joy - like your Mendes print.

For pure investment purposes, even though they are all limited editions you probably need to get the studio stamped or signed editions. Which are much more expensive to start with.

It really depends what you mean by investment and what your aims are.

Greg Williams photos are incredible, he's a real master, and he will always be regarded as one of the great cinema photographers of this era (I know he's more than just an entertainment photographer, but for the purpose of this thread that's how I'll describe him). However, I'm not that thrilled by the stamped limited editions. I would kill for the signed ones (not literally, mods!) but they are very expensive.

Another thought is Michael Gillette's works:

Original Bond posters will always have a value, but whether it’s an investment is another matter. I used to collect cinema posters in the 80/90s, then had a clear out about 5/6 years ago. I got very lucky on some, but the peak had past and it’s carried on going down.

They need to be original and in trimmed for any value and that becomes harder to prove on newer ones as so many reprints.

Nows a time to sell Bond stuff not buy, as prices are high

Williams' work is beautiful but I have my doubts his prints would hold their value (certainly the large format stuff won't) so it would surely be a case of "buy what you love" without regard to whether it's a sound investment.

"Artwork" is a pretty broad term. It sounds like you're interested in an artist's interpretation of Bond. Personally I'd poke around online and see what's out there. Bottleneck Gallery and Limited100, for example, both represent artists known for Bond themes.

Some years ago I went to an exhibition by Q Pop, a trendy LA Gallery which had mounted a Bond-themed invitational that resulted in a fantastic array of original paintings, lithographs, and more ranging from humorous to dark.

As has been suggested, "artwork" could also extend to posters and other "flats." You might also have a look at original layouts for the various Bond comic strips or graphic novels, etc. The illustrator of the new portfolio series of Fleming books offers prints and original drawings of her work, too.

There's some amazing fan-made stuff out there as well.

    Think outside the frame.

    Thanks everyone!

For me, I really like some of the Greg Williams prints, but couldn’t justify paying for the signed editions given that I’m not sure i’d be able to sell it in the future to get my money back, compared to investing that money with other more reputable artists (eg Damien Hirst, Connor Brothers etc).

As mentioned, I own the Mendes print and also the “Jack” Doulton figure from Skyfall - both I love when I see them in the room, and it’s nice to know I could always sell them via ebay if I ever needed the money (and they’ve gone up in value too).

I did contemplate some of the props via the 007Store (Safin mask, spectre mask, cane etc), but the reviews suggested the quality of the work wasn’t great.

I did consider some original film posters for either Casino Royale or Skyfall, however, I’ve decided to go for the Greg Williams photos (just the stamped editions) as there’s not much difference in price and they’re quite iconic images.

Only issue now is deciding between the Daniel Craig Prints!! 😂
