SPECTRE trousers (Neil Barrett) from Royalefilmwear

I was very fortunate to pick up a second hand pair of the Neil Barrett trousers from SPECTRE. I recently had these tailored to the right length, which gave me some off-cuts of the original material to send to Daniel Love at Royalefilmwear. Daniel is now in process to produce “MI6 Trousers” and has preliminary uploaded details on his site (though they are not available yet!)

The photos currently on his site are my originals, part of a file of photos, including lots of detailed measurements, to help get all the proportions correct.

Anyway watch this space, as sourcing and production progress, as hopefully one of the rarer Craig era items, will now get the Royalefilmwear treatment!

Thanks so much for taking the time to provide me with everything you have. I must say, I was shocked at how stretchy the fabric is, i never would have guessed that from the photos. The fabric is going to be the hardest part, we've already nailed down much of the pattern, but sourcing the right fabric is what will take time.

    Thanks again,

    Daniel.

Many years ago the brand Buffalo by David Britton had pants that they called dress pants that were identical to these. We sold them at this store I used to work at. We had them forever. We had them returned by customers that purchased them online as the pockets in the photos online at the time showed Curve pockets like jeans when they were actually the same as these Barrett’s.

I wonder if the Barrett’s and Britton’s were sourced from the same company. These are beautiful pants! Can’t wait for them to be released.

@SilverFinger Do you have an idea of how the fit will be? Will it be similar Ocean Club Trousers, or is it too early to say?

Are we talking about this one?

If the fabric is matched count me in!

Yep those are the ones. Always loved the small puppytooth and frogmouth pocket detail. Bought so many alternatives over the years. Daniel Love is going to crush this project, he makes incredible stuff.

That just gave me the warm and fuzzies... thanks man. The fabric will be a challenge, but we're on it!

We have the fit of the originals. Now, while they're a skinny fit, I'm aiming more for a slim fit with a similar low rise to the original. From a practical standpoint I want to offer something that works for most people. The slim option will do that and if you must have a skinnier fit you can have them taken in, so that is still an option. In a nut shell, slim fit not skinny, otherwise yours truly may not even be able to wear them.

Fabric update: We've looked at a few 'close' options, but to get the correct weave and stretch together is proving as difficult as I expected it to be. With that in mind, we're now making our own fabric. As we do have the original fabric, I know exactly what it needs to be, we'll make it. It will delay the sample by about two weeks I think.

If possible, inseam for non nba athletes as well please.

  • SilverFingerSilverFinger Brisbane, AustraliaPosts: 280MI6 Agent

It will be a longer inseam, most guys will need to have them taken up, so please look to purchase with that in mind.

Those look great, Daniel! For comparison, here are a couple of images @kadd sent me years ago for the post I did on alternatives (on the right) and the Royale Filmwear ones on the left:

I'm sure it's the different lighting in the photos that's causing the differences in the colors between the two fabrics. But it looks like you nailed most of the small details. The only things I could suggest are:

    1. It looks like the frogmouth pockets on the NB's are wider/longer horizontally. Knowing your incredible attention to detail, I'm guessing you've measured the width of the pockets and the difference in the photos is due to something like the different sizes or the way the pants are positioned in the photos.
    2. The position of the belt loops closest to the front closure looks spot on. But the second belt loops seem to be farther back along the waistband on the originals. Again, I'm sure you've measured the distance between the belt loops and adjusted for different sizes, so it's probably just the position of the pants in the photos. Also, if possible, could the belt loops themselves be a little thinner?
    3. The the way the fabric is used along the waistband: on the originals, the "tick" pattern goes from bottom left to top right (opposite to the direction on the main part of the pants). On your version, you've kept the waistband fabric going in the same direction as the fabric on the main part of the pants. I have no idea if that difference was unique to kadd's pair or if it was a specific design detail. But it's a small thing I noticed.

One of the big things I've heard about the NB's is that they're a very particular fit: low rise and very slim fitting with a lot of taper. So I think it would be very helpful for people pre-ordering if you could include very specific sizing details, like the rise front and back, thigh width, calf width, width at the cuff. You're sizing charts are always spot on, so I'm sure you've thought of this. I'd also be very interested in what the actual composition of the fabric is.

Great work once again, Daniel! Cheers!

Dan, canoe2 covered most of the issues I can see. However I'd like to add that the actual NB trousers have a much thinner edge to the front pocket opening as would dress trousers . The sample seam/border is much thicker and reminds me of regular jeans pockets.

Looking forward to the final product.

Here's a much better photo of the originals in comparison. Lighting is always a moving target, having the original fabric for this one to work from was a real help. I'll have a look at the pocket length when I have them, but it simply terminates into the outer seam. Appreciate the feedback!

Wow looks so good already! Just my two cents. Occasionally with longer inseam pants; I know shortening the inseam at the tailor is a super easy alteration, no problem at all, but occasionally with the ones that come this way for that vary reason, the taper starts way too late so they end up being a tad baggier for those that have to hem any more than an inch or two.

Again, i know im just one person but I’ve had that happen a time or two with the pants that come with the longer inseam for the ability to shorten. The first photos look great! Are the originals maybe a touch darker? Or like stated could just be lighting, i know thats always a thing. So if possible, when making these with the longer inseam, possibly consider the taper?

Im not one to nit pick at all, just a couple thoughts. Thank you so much for your hard work on these! Legitimately excited for this!

The fabric pattern match looks amazing. Let me know if you need any further detailed measurements from the originals!

Has the fabric the stretch quality of the originals?

    Very impressive material wise.

will leave the feature comparison for the more eagle eyed

I'll have to wait to receive them, but yes the stretch was the major reason we had to produce our own. That was a key requirement. but I will confirm that once received.

Further detail received... I've mocked-up the changes to the pocket design, excuse the pencil marks (and lack of talent)

It’s looking really good. The re-shaped pocket is now directly from a template drawn from originals and sent to SilverFinger.

I think summary of changes ( thanks to eagle eye of Canoe2) is as follows:

    1. pocket shape based now on actual template from original trousers (Size 50)
    2. no stitching on vertical seam from front pocket to waistband
    3. waistband and top edge of back pocket - fabric at 90 degree angle from rest of fabric
    4. belt loops re-measured and checked

Any other observations let us know! Great work and I still cannot get over the fabric match as not an easy pattern to match.

  • SilverFingerSilverFinger Brisbane, AustraliaPosts: 280MI6 Agent

Good summary, I'll report back on the fabric stretch and likeness. I do have the smallest piece of original fabric here, so I'll take a direct comparison photo.
