Crisis preparation and sensible "prepping"

We have all experienced the pandemic: Many also have been through hurricanes, floods, the electric power going away and so on. A few may even have experienced war, and tragically we have a ongoing war on the European continent. As a result preparing for a crisis isn't just for people with 20 rifles, a bunker and a million rounds of ammo for the zombie apocalypse. I don't want to make members worry more, I just wanted to start a thread where we swap thoughts and ideas on how to calmly and rationally prepare for situations that may or may not happen.
In Norway the authorities recommend that everyone has prepared for a week without government services , open banks and shops , running water and electricity. I think this makes sense for everyone. People live under different circumstances. Someone living in the tropics probably don't worry a lot about firewood, while where I live there is a tradition for having stored firewood for several winters. I do have 20 liters of water, the minimum for what one person needs for one week.
Here are some other things people will/may need in a crisis:
- Food that can be stored for a long time at room temperature.
- Some way to heat water, food and at least one room.
- Petrol. A home generator to make some electricity may get very important.
- Medicine and first aid kit. We all know masks and hand cleaners can turn out to be useful.
- Batteries, matches and candles, flashlight. A power bank for your mobile phone can be handy.
- Cash
- Toilet paper.
- A warm blanket.
- Battery powered radio.
- More?

We have the same information from the government here on the island…apparently we are overdue a rather large earthquake 👀 I was shaken awake by one two weeks ago - it’s the first one I’ve felt since moving here.
We have most of that stuff ready prepared in the garage.
If you saw my garage you'd think the apocalypse had already taken place.

I think my garage must be modelled on yours. 😀
it's the manly way! 😁
Question: If you have some kind of crisis storage somewhere, what type of crisis do you see as most likely to happen where you live? In my case it's another pandemic or not being on the power grid after a hurricane. The reason is mainly that I've experienced both. Many types of crisis are impossible here (vulcanoes, tornadoes , floods) or very unlikely (civil unrest, big fires etc.)
It’s very definitely earthquake here…we’ve had about seven since I’ve been here (6 months), I’ve only felt one though…
We get earthquakes here often, but mainly minor and not detectable, but we’ve had two in the past few months where shaking has occurred. Storing water is the main concern and we always have at least 100 litres in hand. A stock of canned and dried foods are essential to have. We have generators here but there is only one special power point that can be used when they have to be used. We are allowed a 4-socket multi-plug extension for that, so that works for the fans and small appliances for cooking.
The zombies won’t get past the gate security, they’re very strict on who is allowed in 😁
But do you have firewood for a whole winter? 😁
Lots of firewood and coal, N24, barbecues are very a very common feature here…
👌
We are ok here for firewood 😁
That would be enough for a while .....
I have most of the stuff needed on secure but easy access storage. Also I have the required skill set to take care of the family if SHTF. Also, I have contacts to get info beyond news cycle to make the decision on wheter we're staying put or bugging out. One major flaw though: depending on the crisis, I might be pressed to service and not at home and the SWMBO is not too keen on doomsday scenario role play....😁

Today I intended to buy an emergency radio. The type with batteries, solar pannel and a hand crank. I went to three shops. All of them had the same reply: we're out, come back in a month or two. 10-20 liter water containers are also hard to find in shops. More and more people are clearly building their emergency kits.
Anyone here who has invested in an emergency radio? In Norway the sales of these radios as increased by maybe 200% in the last year. The sales of water containers increases much more. Is this something that happens in other , less important (😉) countries too?
🤣
I've got some emergency candles in the store cupboard at the top of the stairs. Does that count?
Yes, but some water would help a lot. Batteries, food, matches etc. too. Just think what you'd need if the electricity went away for a week, what would you need?
Do the authorities in the UK encourage the population to plan for a certain amount of time of crisis? Three days, a week? If so, what do they advice people to have ar home?
But if you want to go full sensible you need a three-room (+ an organic toilet) bunker in your back yard, food to last you for a two term US presidency, enough guns and ammo for a an army company and of course a zombie recognition chart.
The UK doesn’t really have earthquakes - certainly not of any note - and tornadoes aren’t really a thing either…so there isn’t much call for crisis planning…although after Covid everyone has a good stash of bog rolls now 🤣
Hurricanes, power outages, hacking of infrastructure?
Hurricanes - no.
Power outages - only when Edward Heath got involved 👀
Hacking of infrastructure - not really an issue.
Norway must be a terrible place to live if you are worried about all those 😱😉
We do experience those things, even though problems with the electricity are the result of hurricanes and not governments. Hacking on the other hand can be caused by governments, but not our own. 😄
I have visited UK for more times than I care to count. The reason you don't worry about the hacking of your infrastructure is because most of your "infra" is from 1864. Whatever is of more modern, that being quite relative as well as generous lable, is hodge-podge of cheapest vendor product. I can't fathom how your infrastructure could be hacked!

Some of It HAS been hacked…it just wasn’t worth the hackers effort 🤣
Why do you think I moved to Canada? 🇨🇦😁
🤣🤣
At the minute living in Canada is still like this…
